Job overview

We are seeking a talented Theatre Director in Residence to contribute to and support the productions output for the Drama Department at Emanuel School.

You will assist the Department in creating the show schedule for the year ahead, allocating roles, directing productions, and overseeing these productions throughout the year. You will also help prepare pupils for GCSE and A level exams. 

The Drama Department focuses much attention on the creation of ambitious public performances, and we are fortunate to have a variety of performance spaces around the school as well as a dedicated technical team.

We envisage that this role will be a key leadership role in shaping the co-curricular provision for the Drama Department. It is vital that the appointed person has a keen interest in establishing new and exciting projects at the school and we are particularly interested in candidates who have clear ideas for adding to our provision. 

The successful candidate will possess excellent knowledge of drama and drama education, as well as experience of developing and directing productions and a demonstrable basic knowledge of technical theatre (e.g., lighting, sound etc.).

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
