Job overview

Director, Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)

The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is the UK's leading learned society and professional body for geography, founded in 1830. It is a world leader in advancing geography and supporting its practitioners in the UK and across the world, reaching a unique community of geographers, from experts to enthusiasts. The Society is a charity, serving the public benefit. It is also a membership body, with over 16,000 subscribing members and the support of some 2,800 volunteers.

The Society’s work spans a wide range of activities, including a vibrant programme of events, publishing academic journals and resources, supporting education and research, fieldwork and expeditions, and running a professional accreditation programme. It also provides advice to policy makers and promotes geography to a wide audience. Based in its headquarters in Kensington in central London, it has a staff of 60.

The Society seeks to appoint a Director to succeed Dr Rita Gardner CBE, who will be stepping down in April 2018. As its Chief Executive, the Director will provide strategic and operational leadership to the Society, working in collaboration with the President and Trustees to ensure that RGS-IBG fulfils its mission and its commitment to its members and supporters, as well as overseeing the efficient management of its assets and ensuring financial sustainability.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable record of successful and inspirational leadership, the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, and to think strategically to advance the goals of the Society in a changing world. Most importantly, the new Director will possess a strong appreciation for geography in all of its contexts and be able to act as a compelling champion for the discipline.
