Job overview

Director of Boarding & Wellbeing

Do you have experience -and a love- of running a boarding house? Do you believe that the welfare and wellbeing of students is the most important priority of any and every school? Are you interested in setting yourself a new and stretching challenge at one of the country’s most interesting and unique schools, in the heart of one of its most beautiful cities?

While most job adverts describe the role as ‘exciting’ -and some turn out to be far from it in reality- we are confident that it really does apply to this job. This new Senior Leadership role combines responsibility for leading, managing and strategically developing boarding provision (to really put boarding at Bootham on the national and international map) with the development of a new wellbeing strategy for students and staff, contributing to the emerging national debate about the crucial importance of wellbeing and good mental health in schools.

Bootham is a Quaker school, where liberal individuality rooted in the context of a vibrant shared life as a community, a radical spirit of enquiry, and the search for truth wherever is may be found, are at the heart of our daily life, our practices and our mission. While few staff join Bootham from a Quaker background, most are attracted by a strong and tangible sense of ‘fit’ with the culture, and quickly come to embrace its values. If these values resonate with you, and your experience matches our requirements, you may be very attracted to our new role of Head of Boarding and Wellbeing.

Why not take a look at our recruitment brochure on our website at: Bootham School

where we attempt in detail to describe this role and what it’s like to work at Bootham?  You might really like what you see!

Our closing date for applications is 16th January 2018.

First round interviews will be held on 30th or 31st January and final round interviews on 8th February.

Bootham School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All appointments are subject to a satisfactory DBS Enhanced Disclosure

Bootham School is a leading co-educational day and boarding school located in the beautiful and historic city of York. Set across two sites, it is home to more than 670 students aged 3-19. The senior school occupies 10 acres in the heart of the city, a few minutes walk from York Minster. Bootham Junior School is just over a mile away, on a purpose-built 10-acre site.

Bootham continues to build on its national reputation as a school with a difference and numbers across both schools are at an historic high. Founded by Quaker families, the School values academic rigour and public duty and encourages students to be creative thinkers, peacemakers and confident humanitarians.

Academic standards are strong and leavers gain entry to the UK’s leading universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, UCL, King’s College, Central St. Martin’s and the Royal College of Music. The School also has a well-earned reputation for producing future engineers and students are regular holders of the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship.

The award-winning enrichment programme allows students to choose from more than 100 activities. All teaching staff participate in this programme, and some may lead in sport, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme or on the many local trips and global expeditions which are a feature of Bootham life.

Our staff can expect to enjoy excellent facilities and benefits. We welcome applications from enthusiastic professionals who seek not just a workplace but a community based on dedication, camaraderie, and purpose.
