The Governors are seeking to appoint a Director of English or an Associate Assistant Headteacher, to Lead our English team on a permanent contract from January 1st 2020. We are seeking a person who has experience of being a successful middle leader and who possibly wishes to take the first rung on the ladder to senior leadership.  The successful candidate will lead on developing the department and raising achievement across the school.  We would encourage those with less experience to apply for the role of Director of English with the view of working towards a Leadership position.

As a Director of English, you will:

• Raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the curriculum area and monitor and support student progress.

• Be accountable for student progress and development within the curriculum area.

• Develop and enhance your own and the teaching practice of others.

• Ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the curriculum area, in accordance with the aims of the school and the curricular policies.

• To have accountability for the leadership, management and development of the English curriculum across both Key Stages.

• Be responsible for the development of cross curricular literacy

• Effectively manage and deploy teaching/support and technical staff, financial and physical resources within the curriculum area to support the designated curriculum portfolio.

An experienced Director of English progressing to an Associate Assistant Headteacher, will in addition to their substantive post:

• Teach and undertake the professional responsibilities of the Assistant Headteacher in accordance with the Teacher’s Pay and Conditions document as directed by the Headteacher.

• Work with and support the Headteacher in the internal organisation and management of the school, as prescribed by the Headteacher

• Support the supervision of teaching and support staff in relation to the conditions of service.

• Contribute to the school’s strategic development as a leading member of the school’s leadership team.

• Support the Headteacher in maintaining and developing the good name of the school at all times, both internally and externally.

This is an exciting time to join Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and develop a truly coherent provision for our students.  You will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff who are welcoming, open-minded and supportive. It is a particularly exciting time to join the school as we are undertaking a whole school review of our curriculum to ensure our students will leave us and be able to ’stand shoulder to shoulder’ with any other young person, from any other background.

The successful candidate will be at the forefront of this transformational change and we are looking for someone who is creative, dynamic, and willing to embrace this challenge head on.
