Job overview

Clifton College is looking for an inspiring, enthusiastic and qualified coach to direct the delivery of our hockey programme for our pupils throughout the academic year. Clifton College has a strong reputation for hockey, producing international players as well as reaching National Finals across various age groups for the last 15 years. The Director of Hockey will take responsibility for the running of girls and boys hockey in the Upper School from September 2020. There is also the opportunity for a suitable candidate to teach Physical Education at IGCSE and A Level and/or the Level 3 BTEC National in Sport alongside this role.

Sport at Clifton College has recently reviewed its structure with hockey as one of its elite sports, and we offer sports scholarships as part of the school’s Performance Sports Programme. This allows hockey players additional training sessions as well as access to physiotherapy, strength and conditioning and 1:1 tutoring. The Director of Hockey will join a team of Directors of Sports who work together to ensure that there is a child-centred approach to the demands of school academics and sporting commitment.

Clifton College already has links with surrounding National League hockey clubs and has recently set up its own club. The hockey facilities include two hybrid astroturfs and a water-based pitch as well as on-site facilities. The Director of Hockey will work closely with the Director of Sport but will be supported by the Assistant Director of Hockey; other specialised hockey staff include a specific goal-keeper coach and high performance coach.

The Director of Hockey will strive to enhance both participation and performance in hockey for girls and boys in the school. They will also manage a team of staff who, as well as experienced and qualified hockey coaches, will consist of many teachers who will need much guidance in coaching the sport. Recruitment of new hockey players to the school will also play a key part in this role and it is essential that the Director of Hockey establishes working relationships with our feeder prep schools as well as the England Hockey Performance Pathway.

If you would like an informal discussion about any aspect of the role and/or school, please contact the Director of Sport, Mr Andrew Wagstaff awagstaff@cliftoncollege.com

This is a full time position from September 2020.

This vacancy closes on 26 January 2020.

A DBS disclosure (enhanced) will be requested for all successful applicants. The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

Clifton College is an equal opportunities employer.

Clifton College leads the way as one of the best Public Boarding Schools in the country. We offer day places, flexi and full boarding places. Welcoming boys and girls from 2 to 18, Clifton becomes the school every pupil needs it to be, preparing them for life in the real world, not in a ‘bubble’. We are known for academic excellence, myriad opportunities, state of the art facilities, superb pastoral care and expert staff who deliver the very best learning and development. We provide a richly diverse and connected school environment, representative of the real world. Our pupils mature into individuals who are ambitious, open-minded and spirited.

Bristol businessman Dr John Percival, who championed the benefits of science, diversity and the education of women, founded Clifton College in 1862. The College has since fostered the talents of students including General Douglas Haig and Olympic hockey gold medallist Lily Owsley. The NSPCC had its first meeting on the school’s grounds.

Clifton College Upper School is housed in historical buildings, such as the Grade II-listed Percival Library, but it boasts state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including 24 tennis courts and an Olympic-standard hockey pitch.
