Job overview

Due to the retirement of the current Director of Learning English, the governing body is seeking to appoint an inspirational and dynamic Director of Learning English to join our outstanding English Department.  The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, have first rate leadership skills and have the aspiration to become a senior leader. We are an inclusive school and we welcome applications from both Catholics and non Catholics.

The school will be holding an evening for all interested candidates on the 7th March at 5pm. This will be an informal opportunity to meet the English team, senior leadership, tour the school and meet some pupils. Light refreshments will be provided and there will be opportunities to ask any questions. Candidates are not required to attend, but it is an excellent opportunity to see what the department and school is ‘all about’. If you would like to attend please contact the school in advance.

Cardinal Newman School is an 11-19 mixed Voluntary Aided school, with 800 pupils currently on roll. The school is over-subscribed. The school has an excellent reputation for both our academic results and our pastoral care. We are a Central South ‘Hub School’ offering school to school support to other schools in the consortium. We are also a Welsh Government New Deal School. We achieved 69% L2 Threshold (Including Maths and English) and 78% English L2 in 2016. Our GCSE English results and Welsh Government Reading scores are among the best in the local authority. We are quartile one for our Reading scores. Our Director of Learning – English sits on our Extended Leadership Team and contributes to the strategic direction of the whole school. We are a ‘Green School’ and ‘Standards Group One’ in the new Welsh Government banding. We consider ourselves an ‘Excellent’ school and eagerly await having this confirmed in our next inspection.
