Job overview

King James I Academy is an over-subscribed 11-18 school right in the heart of the town centre with onsite parking and easy access to public transport. Our staff are friendly, talented and professional. We offer an excellent CPD programme and aim to develop all our staff. We are very proud of our school and our belief is that while at King James I Academy our students will be safe, happy and very well looked after. We will ensure that they are successful academically. When they leave us, they will have also developed the personal skills and qualities to confidently move onto the next stage of their education and into the wider world.

We are now looking to recruit a talented, ambitious and creative leader to take a significant role leading our Art & Photography Department.  We need an experienced teacher who will lead by example, is a team player, resilient, with excellent organisational and communication skills and with a desire to develop other staff within the department. Most importantly we need a leader who takes pride in building relationships with staff and students and believes strongly in the ability of all students both within and beyond the classroom. You will be able to inspire and motivate colleagues and students alike, and will be supported through a bespoke and individually tailored induction programme as well as being given opportunities and support for further career and professional development.  We would welcome applicants with experience of teaching GCSE and AS/A Level Art & Photography, but this is not essential.

The school has operated as a standalone Academy since June 2011 and has since benefitted from the PSBP programme; enabling a move to new state of the art facilities in January 2015.  Student recruitment is strong and the Academy has been oversubscribed in Year 7 for each of the last 3 years.  This is also the case for September 2022, whilst Sixth Form numbers are also increasing.

Examination results in Key Stage 4 & 5 are outstanding with the Academy achieving 100% pass rate.  GCSE Art students exceeded national averages in the 5 to 9 grade bracket.  GCSE Photography results in 2022 were also outstanding with students achieving on average 1.5 grades higher than their targets and exceeding national averages.  A Level Art and Photography students all either achieved or exceeded targets with two thirds of A Level Art students achieving a top grade of A/A*.

Closing Date: Monday 10 October (noon)                            Interviews: Friday 14 October

Please visit our website or ring or email the Academy for an application pack. If you would like to arrange an informal visit please contact Karen Sams at (kingjames@kj1a.com) or telephone 01388 603388.

The Academy is committed to safeguarding children. All candidates will need to demonstrate a commitment to the welfare and safety of children and young people. Any offer of employment will be conditional upon receipt of two supportive references and the successful completion of pre-employment checks. An application to the Disclosure and Barring Service will be submitted when the successful candidate has accepted the position.
