Job overview

We are a charity that helps launch young people for life today whatever they want to do after school and helps seafarers to keep learning all their lives. Our vision is to be the leading maritime charity for youth development and lifelong learning.

Through Sea Cadets, we engage 14,000 young people and 9,000 volunteers across 400 units and training centres thoughout the UK. We also support thousands of seafarers to keep learning wherever they are in the world. We are working to deliver our vision to be the leading maritime charity for youth development and lifelong learning.

As Director of Lifelong Learning, you will report to the Chief Executive as a member of our leadership team. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing the comprehensive Lifelong Learning function of 60 staff
  • Leading the development and delivery of the training element of the sea cadet experience, including the training of our many volunteers.
  • Leading the Marine Society Seafarer Education team and growing our reach and impact internationally.
  • Playing a full role as part of Senior Management Team in contributing to the overall strategic and operational running of the charity.

You will need a strong background in educational leadership and a passion for the transformational effect that new opportunities for personal and professional development can have on people’s lives. You will champion the continued development of high quality educational programmes, underpinned by a robust approach to outcomes, quality and consistency. As well as developing content directly for our Sea Cadets and seafarers, you will also provide excellent training and development for the many committed volunteers who are vital to enable us to deliver our activities successfully. Previous experience within the maritime sector is not essential.

This is a uniquely broad and varied role where you can really make a visible impact on enriching the lives of the many people who access the educational and development opportunities we provide.
