Job overview

Position: Director of Mathematical Development

Start Date: September 2018 Salary:

Individual Salary Range starting from L10 -14

Are you looking for an opportunity to lead mathematics in a successful, over-subscribed and expanding school?

This very large and oversubscribed 11-19 mixed comprehensive needs a dynamic leader to enable the next stage in our redevelopment of the mathematics department. Successful at A level, we are recruiting extra leadership capacity to sustain what works, and improve outcomes and progress at GCSE.

Thomas Tallis is a flourishing and popular school situated in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. In 2011 it moved to a new £52m building with state of the art facilities and infrastructure.  There are currently 1850 pupils on the school role and the intake is fully comprehensive from Years 7 to 11.  We have 500+ students in our thriving and extremely successful 6th Form.

The Governors and Head are looking to appoint a highly qualified, energetic and innovative Director of Mathematical Development.  You will be experienced and successful in maths leadership, able to teach Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and with the drive and ambition to make a difference to young people’s life chances in this vibrant and interesting school.

This post is at Extended Leadership Group level and offers an unmissable opportunity to join a very strong team committed to powerful knowledge, creativity and an education to understand the world and change it for the better.

Thomas Tallis Mathematics Department  The Tallis mathematics department has 18 well-qualified teachers, 3 specialist teaching assistants and a cover supervisor. Since 2015 we have been redeveloping our approach to mathematics, and there is evidence of better achievement in KS3.  However, GCSE success has been challenging since 2014 and after sustained and useful consultancy in 2017-18 we now seek a permanent new senior leader for mathematics.

We expect teachers at Tallis to be expert in their field and committed to their own learning, not just as teachers and leaders but also in their subject knowledge and development.  You will therefore understand yourself as a mathematician and burn with desire to impart a love of mathematics as a tool to understand and change the world. We expect our senior leaders not only to be experienced teachers and successful middle leaders, but to have considerable intellectual capacity.

The post is at Director level which offers a seat on the Extended Leadership Group and the chance to shape and participate in whole-school priorities.  Tallis’s LG is Head, 2 DHT, 5 AHT and Business Director: the ELG adds Directors of Arts and Creativity, Data, Guidance, Science, and ITT.  We have high hopes for this new post to increase mathematics achievement at Tallis, as has the parallel Director of Science post.

Tallis is a school where effective leaders are given much freedom to develop their teams and departments.  While committed to creativity and powerful knowledge, we have no imposed style of teaching or leadership.   We take workload concerns very seriously and seek to make our provision not only excellent but sustainable.  The successful candidate will find that Tallis is a place where much is expected, but much freedom is given.

All candidates will be subject to full Safer Recruitment procedures as laid down by the DfE.
