Job overview

Music is an integral part of life at Cokethorpe School. Excellence at the top end is underpinned by an ethos of participation throughout. In addition to curriculum music, there are numerous opportunities to take part in a wide range of musical activities. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to play a part in meaningful music-making at national, School, inter-House, or purely recreational level.

At Cokethorpe, we are justifiably proud of the achievements of our pupils and of the programmes that we offer. The School’s pupils provide a rich source of musical talent resulting in frequent and varied high profile musical success. The School actively encourages pupils to attend county orchestras and choirs to further develop their performing experiences. A number of pupils represent their county or country in a range of ensembles every year. Like many other schools, music-making has been hit hard by the pandemic, and this role presents an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, engaging musician to craft new and further opportunities.

Purpose

Following the appointment of the current Director of Music to Housemaster of Feilden House, we seek a well-qualified musician to continue the development of the Music Department. The postholder will be responsible for all matters relating to the non-academic music provision of the School. This will require an effective relationship with the Head of Academic Music where there are significant crossovers.

About Cokethorpe

Cokethorpe is an HMC and IAPS, independent day school providing a liberal education to boys and girls from the age of four to eighteen. Situated in beautiful parkland just ten miles outside Oxford, the School has a strong reputation for providing a rigorous, broad curriculum underpinned by a firm belief in the principles of a liberal education, and a knowledge that all pupils have the capacity for excellence if encouraged to be ambitious and take responsibility for their learning. The School is proud of the fact that its admissions process credits pupils who show a wide-range of skills, leading to a dynamic and diverse learning environment. Students leave Cokethorpe to study at a range of different institutions, including Oxbridge, Russell Group and other equally reputable institutions.

Results at GCSE and A Level are very positive, with a strong emphasis on the value that is added to students through excellent teaching and learning. Success at Cokethorpe is bolstered by the Leadership Programme, which runs through the School and encourages pupils to develop particular traits: ambition, courage, integrity, judgement, empathy and responsibility. The aim is for pupils to take ownership of their own development. The School has a strong extra-curricular programme and, whilst excellence in the classroom  is paramount, all members of the Common Room are encouraged to see themselves as playing a role in this wider curriculum. It is a busy, purposeful school in which positive relations develop and exciting and varied opportunities arise.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
