Key Responsibilities

Having regard in the Senior School for the promotion and teaching of Music in all of its many guises.

• to provide inspirational teaching and leadership within the School of Music, so as to foster excellence in all that it achieves;

• to lead exceptional co-curricular music provision across the School and to provide relevant opportunities for pupils to engage in instrumental and vocal tuition, orchestra, ensembles, concerts, Choir Tours and Musical/Drama productions;

• to formulate and monitor plans for the teaching and promotion of all musical activity across the School which supports pupil requirements and which underpins the strategic direction of the School;

• To ensure that provision in Music across the Senior School provides excellent opportunities for all pupils, including the most able and those pupils with SEND

• To maintain a comprehensive and voluminous programme of musical events through the year, working with the Executive Director of Co-Curriculum & Operations so as to ensure the smooth and orderly operation of the School Calendar

• to develop and review syllabae, resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in the subject;

• to foster and oversee the application of learning technologies in the subject, ensuring that it contributes to wider school initiatives in this important area;

• to provide a comprehensive, high quality and cost-effective programme of co-curricular activities.

• to ensure that pupils are prepared for public and individual music examinations and to advise senior colleagues on all aspects of our examination courses; 

• to manage and maintain the instruments owned and loaned by the School and ensure that appropriate records are maintained;

• to anticipate and respond to national and international developments in music teaching, maintaining a strong knowledge and understanding of them;

• to co-ordinate and host an exciting programme for our Ensemble in Residence (The Berkeley Ensemble);

• to recruit and select high quality visiting music teachers, helping the HR Department to ensure that all aspects of safer recruiting best practice are adhered to in the process;

• to manage all aspects of our visiting music teacher provision, including processes for quality assurance

• To work with the Executive Director of Admissions on all aspects of the recruitment of scholars and exhibitioners into the subject, and to ensure a high-quality programme of provision for them thereafter

• to undertake performance management of relevant staff and to contribute to the training of earlycareer teachers as appropriate

• to manage the financial resources of the Faculty; • to ensure that teaching and individual tuition are effectively timetabled;

• to lead on the provision of music for school events including whole school assemblies and services, Prize Giving, Carol Service, Open Days, FIPS events and the House Music Competition

• To liaise with the Director of Music in the Prep School to ensure a cohesive and coherent approach to the subject across the entirety of the school

• to participate in Faculty review in collaboration with the Deputy Head (academic), contributing to the School Development Plan as appropriate

• to produce an annual analysis of examination results and to contribute to the School’s Self-Evaluation Form as appropriate;

• to identify underperforming pupils and to implement plans for improvement, working with members of the pastoral team and parents as appropriate;

• to provide Faculty information for all publication and digital spaces where it is required • to ensure that the spaces in which music is taught are fit-for-purpose and that they provide a comfortable and attractive environment which is conducive to learning • to ensure that health and safety practice within the Faculty follows School policy and to carry out risk assessments as appropriate;

• to communicate effectively with parents and pupils about co-curricular activities and the music curriculum, teaching and learning matters and maintain high standards and expectations;

• to promote pupil achievements, career opportunities and experiences in Music, providing relevant material for the School’s marketing activities

• to collaborate with other schools and to ensure that IPS has links with local primary and prep schools and other relevant organisations so as to ensure that the subject makes a significant contribution to our partnerships programme;

• to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact;

• to communicate and co-operate with relevant outside organisations;

• to maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the School premises and when they are engaged in authorised School activities elsewhere;

• to participate in meetings at the School which relate to the curriculum for the School or the administration or organisation of the School, including pastoral arrangements;

• to supervise and, so far as practicable, teach any pupils whose music teacher is not available to teach them; This job description is a broad outline of duties and responsibilities involved, and may be amended, as necessary following discussion between the post-holder and the Head

Ibstock Place School is an independent co-educational day school for pupils aged 4 to 18. The school occupies a ten-acre site on the edge of Richmond Park in South West London.

An urban location with a beautiful botanical feel, Ibstock is the perfect home for scholarly exploration and adventure. Championing co-education since our founding in 1896, we have created a diverse environment that reflects real-world communities and workplaces.

Our school is over subscribed, with assessed entry at the age of four for Kindergarten (Reception). There is a competitive entry examination at the age of eleven and most pupils in the Prep School proceed on into the Senior School.
