Job overview

Director of Music

Music nurtures the joy of childhood, the sense of community and the spirit of participation - participation for all and without fear - which were the founding principles of our proudly non-selective school when it opened in 2003. That ethos is as vibrant today as the school continues its expansion.

Community

Music is a collective enterprise at NHP. Come to a Monday morning assembly, and you will see the whole school, teachers and children, experiencing the joy of uninhibited music making. Come to the NHP Christmas Concert and you will see all children performing, joy personified.

Excellence

Alongside the joy music brings us all, is a relentless vision of excellence, played out in concerts, recitals, and the myriad school productions which happen each year. NHP is rightly celebrated in the prep school world as a class leader in Music.

Vision

The Director of Music is the guardian of that vision. Our next Director of Music, therefore, will be an inspiring and innovative teacher, a person of energy and flair, collaborative in style and outlook.  They will be confident to take a NHP Music Department in radiant health and lead it through the next era of the School’s exciting evolution (the department will shortly be moving into state of the art premises in our new building).

The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Director of Music and our powerful team of peripatetic teachers, who are the backbone of the school’s musical output.  He/she will lead the teaching of classroom Music across the school, Reception to Year 8, and build on the school’s reputation for excellence in performance. He/she will  play an integral role in school Drama; NHP productions are a marriage of Music and Drama.

The successful candidate will build upon the outstanding legacy of previous Directors, yet have the chance to establish their own vision for school music in the expanding school. This vision could see the job expand into a Head of Performing Arts role. The candidate will have a chance to explore their ideas at interview.

Please tick the ‘Apply’ button to submit your application form.

The closing date for completed applications is noon on Monday 29th January 2018.  Interview days will be held the week commencing February 5th 2018.

Candidates invited for interview can expect to teach an observed lesson and/or lead an assembly, have a guided tour of the school, meet members of the Music Department and have an interview with the Head and another member of the Senior Management Team.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the DBS.
