It has around 360 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form. St Mary’s Calne is looking for a talented, enthusiastic and experienced teacher, with outstanding inter-personal skills, to lead and manage our exceptional Music Department. We would expect the successful candidate to be able to teach the music curriculum at all levels of the school, to direct and conduct choirs and orchestras to an exceptional standard, as well as taking the lead in overseeing and developing the broad ranging programme of this key department within the school.
The Music Department is based in a purpose built block which is well equipped with instruments, PCs, up to date teaching resources and a recording studio. In addition to curriculum music, around 75% of pupils take individual instrument or singing lessons and there are currently around 30 Music and Choral Scholars.
Music holds an important place at the heart of St Mary’s Calne featuring prominently in events such as Confirmation, Carol Service and Founders’ Day. The department works to develop individual talents, while seeking to bring the whole community together through music. Each year there is a vigorous programme of concerts and events, and a number of collaborations with other prestigious institutions regularly feature.
What we want from you
• A strong academic background and a good honours degree in Music or a related subject.
• Qualified Teacher Status.
• A minimum of three years Music teaching in the secondary sector.
• Up to date knowledge of Music developments for pupils 11-18.
• An empathetic, enthusiastic and well-presented person, capable of inspiring confidence in pupils, parents and staff.
• Ability to: work flexibly to fulfil the requirements of the post; prioritise; work calmly under pressure and respond positively to changing demands.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with very good written and spoken English.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills; competency in the use of ICT for administration and teaching purposes.
• An understanding of the expectations, ethos and aims of a full boarding school.
• Committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and young people.
