Director of Science

The Role:

The opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, highly effective curriculum leader to take the role of Director of Science.

You can be confident that you would be starting from a position of strength.  Science is a strong, stable, firmly established department which achieves good results and has an excellent reputation. The children have come to expect well planned, structured and engaging lessons which seek to excite them about Science and give them lots of opportunities to undertake practical work because that is their experience of their Science lessons.

But we are not looking for a coaster. There is a job of work still to be done, not just to maintain but improve attainment in an increasingly challenging national context. Our children enjoy their Science lessons and achieve well in Science; we would like to see more of them regarding themselves as ‘scientists’.

The Department:

The Science Department delivers a diverse range of examination courses:

• GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science (Trilogy). 
• A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in      Applied Science

Led by a Director of Science and an Assistant Director, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are each co-ordinated by a Lead Teacher. The Department also has a KS3 Co-ordinator.

Our team of Leading Practitioners support staff in their continuous professional development and disseminate good practice. Three of our Leading Practitioners are Science specialists.

What we are looking for:

• A real leader – a curriculum leader with a clear vision of what they want to achieve,      the skills to work with people to sell and consolidate a vision that carries the team with it, and the grit and determination to see it through. 
• A teacher who exemplifies outstanding practice in their own classroom
• Hard work, energy and a commitment to driving improved outcomes with a proven track record of having done so already.
• High levels of personal organisation and the ability to delegate effectively whilst      maintaining an up to date knowledge of current progress in all areas. 
• A leader who enjoys contributing to the bigger picture and works for the benefit of the      whole-school.
• Previous experience as a Head of Science in a smaller school or as a Second in      Science or experience in a role of similar close relevance is essential.
