Job overview

Job Reference 4600/369/18

We are looking for a talented, and passionate leader who will help develop the school still further as a centre of excellence for the sciences, continuing to enhance our strong local reputation through innovative curriculum development, cutting-edge teaching and learning methods, using data effectively and encouraging a collegiate and stimulating environment for students and staff alike. Blue Coat School is located in Oldham, Greater Manchester, and easily commutable from most of the cities and towns in the North West via the M60, M62, M6 and M56.

We want someone who is thoroughly passionate about science and the development of science pedagogy and curriculum, not only within Blue Coat, but also potentially to develop this across our Multi-Academy Trust and Teaching School Alliance.

Science is a large, successful and important department within the school, based in its own purpose-designed building, including 10 modern laboratories, 2 large preparation areas and a staff work room. The department also has access to two additional laboratories which are situated in the main school building. All laboratories have a teacher PC linked to a digital projector. In 2017, departmental P8 was +0.59 with 100% of students achieving grades A*-C in the three separate sciences at GCSE.

The departmental staffing complement currently includes 17 teachers and 3 technicians.

Blue Coat also has an oversubscribed 6th Form of more than 400 students. Science is our most popular subject at A Level and all our A Level courses are thriving, with multiple groups in every discipline.

This post would be ideal for anyone with successful science teaching experience (preferably but not necessarily including A Level) , with ambition and drive, a clear vision of what constitutes excellence in a science department, and some leadership experience (perhaps as a head or second in a subject or department or leading on curriculum, T&L or assessment) and who sees a faculty leadership position as the next step in their career.

We offer:

• Full support from a dedicated, inspirational and approachable leadership team

• A collegiate approach to best practice, with a consultative yet inclusive style

• The opportunity to join a dynamic and successful Ofsted Grade ‘1’ school, currently developing and leading a local MAT

• Career development, advice and the platform towards further career success from the potential we offer to work across our MAT, Teaching School and SCITT structures.

For a full pack including application forms please visit www.bluecoatscience.co.uk or e-mail our advisers ASDTi on gm@asdti.com or telephone ASDTi on 07736 775776 – they are available evenings and weekends as well as during the working day, to help you make the right choice.

Closing date for applications: Friday 18th May 2018 at 11pm

Interviews will be the following week: w/c 21st May

About The Blue Coat CofE School

Welcome to The Blue Coat School

Mission statement:  Faith – Vision – Nurture

Welcome to The Blue Coat School website, which we hope will give you a really good insight into our school, and show how our young people are learning how to become everything they can be, and are meant to be.  You will find all the information about student achievement and progress across the curriculum, and links to national performance data and reports, so you can see how well our young people do, and why we are very proud of our academic record.  Just as important, you’ll also find, in the newsletters especially, a picture of life in a dynamic community where students grow in confidence, independence, leadership and resilience, not only in their lessons, but in the breadth of Blue Coat’s provision.  I hope you will also see how the school’s Christian ethos shines through, and that all our young people, of all faiths and denominations, learn to grow together in love, compassion, generosity of spirit, and mutual respect.  If you are an education professional, or would like to join this great profession, you’ll also find links to our work as a National Teaching School and lead school of The Northern Alliance and our work on system leadership, school-to-school support, research and development, and training the best teachers through the School Direct programme.  We look forward to meeting you.

Mr R Higgins
