Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Director of Swimming, to start in September 2023. An earlier start, from April 2023, may be possible if it would assist in a smooth transition to the new post-holder.

Key responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinate and take the lead for all swimming coaching at Brighton College and Brighton College Prep School in all weekly Games sessions, activity periods and early morning sessions.
  • Develop and deliver a strategy to raise the profile of Brighton College swimming on a regional and national level.
  • Oversee and deliver a programme for the effective coaching of swimmers from club to county and national standard.
  • Plan and evaluate training and competition schedules for all squad swimmers and conduct regular review meetings with each swimmer to discuss performance progress and goals.
  • Lead the swim coaching of multi-sport athletes (including water polo, triathlon and aquathlon) as and when required.
  • Lead on the administration associated with all swimming related sessions, activities and fixtures across both schools, including the hosting of events in the Lido.
  • Maintain a timetable for the Lido that caters for all ages, abilities and demographics across both schools.
  • Continue to build and maintain effective relationships with local swimming and triathlon clubs, staying up to date with latest pathway opportunities for talented athletes.
  • Organise the annual David Dunn Relay aquathlon event
  • To liaise with the Head of Boarding regarding swimming opportunities for boarding pupils.
  • Work closely with the Head of Athletic Development to ensure the strength and conditioning needs of squad swimmers are met.
  • Communicate effectively with the Director of Sport and the Heads of relevant sports to maximize the potential of each athlete.


Other responsibilities:

  • Create, build and sustain an effective working relationship with all key parties to ensure effective, regular communication.
  • Comply with the School’s Health and Safety Policy and procedures.
  • Liaise with the School of Science and Sport Facilities Manager with regards to any potential swimming pool lettings.
  • Build links with other local schools, to assist with the recruitment of pupils who meet the Brighton College entry requirements.
  • Plan, organise and run all school holiday swimming courses in consultation with Brighton College Facilities and the School of Science and Sport Facilities Manager.
  • Act as a Tutor at the College as directed by the Deputy Head Pupils.
  • Maintain up to date and appropriate records.
  • Any other duties that your line manager sees fit, providing that such duties are appropriate to your role. These will include assisting with Saturday fixtures, attending Open Mornings and other marketing events.

Safeguarding responsibilities:

  • This role will involve daily contact with pupils and you will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
  • All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for who you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.


Hours of work:

The post-holder will be on a school teaching or coaching contract. As such, the role will be predominantly term time with some training camps to be run in the holidays. During term time the hours of work will be varied, with some early starts and late finishes.
