Job overview

Contract Term: Initially 3 years

Dulwich College Seoul is a flourishing, high-performing school which offers a wonderful opportunity for excellent teachers to live in the heart of one of Asia’s most dynamic cities. Dulwich College Seoul upholds the traditions and outstanding educational standards which have become the hallmark of the Dulwich name in the UK and Asia. The College has around 650 students from 40 different nationalities across 6 continents in year groups from Nursery to Year 13.

This job will start in August 2017.

The Director of Technology and Innovation will be a creative and dynamic leader who will contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic vision for technology for the whole College. Both a big picture thinker and a hands-on implementer, the Director will be a caring and approachable person able to nurture the effective and creative use of technology amongst our staff and students.

The director will be an outstanding educator who will primarily facilitate the integration of digital tools and best practices into curriculum; collaborating with our excellent technical and administration teams, they will help ensure our systems support the needs of our students, parents and teachers.

The role encompasses whole college technology integration aligned with various ambitions for technology that we hold within the school, including developing film-making, robotics, coding, digital design, streamlining administration, staff professional development in IT and high quality parental communication. The successful applicant will contribute in many of these areas but not necessarily all: our highest priority is to appoint an inspirational leader who will oversee the development of technology at all levels of the school as well as something of quality in their particular areas of expertise. Possession of a creative streak is essential, as is the ability to communicate and plan effectively with the College Leadership Team.

The successful applicant will have a low teaching / co-curricular activity load (approx. 20%) in order to be free to problem-solve, support colleagues, initiate improvements, consolidate our current structures and streamline technology across our one College campus.

Presently the school operates technology for learning in three phases. Up to Year 4 all technology use is managed within school on school-owned devices (iPads, PCs). From Year 5 we operate a Bring Your Own Tablet programme (the majority iPads but we also cater for Android devices) with students also having access to trolleys of laptops in school. From Year 7 we operate a Bring Your Own Laptop programme (an even mix of MacBooks and PC laptops) though we may extend this to Year 9 and retain tablet use in future at Years 7 and 8. We have a computer suite dedicated to specialist software in computing, art, design, etc. There is a strong network, network manager and team of assistants as one might expect in a country so technologically advanced as Korea.

The school utilises SIMS, Google Classroom and CHQ to organise learning and administration. Some specific technical knowledge is sought, if not through direct experience there should be clear evidence of potential to learn about our systems and to train others. The successful candidate will also work closely with colleagues across the Dulwich network to streamline and expand our overall capabilities as a group.

At least 4 years teaching / school experience is required in the U.K. or overseas. All applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree and a post-graduate qualification in education (e.g. PGCE for UK applicants, or equivalent from other countries).

The successful candidate will be working in a purpose built school with small class sizes and motivated students, having access to excellent resources and facilities. All teachers at Dulwich receive an attractive salary and a fully competitive overseas benefits package, including flight allowance, accommodation, living allowance, freight allowance, comprehensive health coverage and free tuition for up to two children at the school.

To apply for the position, go to www.indulwich.com and lodge your application on-line by Monday 1st May 2017 – please note interviews will take place before this date if high quality applicants apply. Dulwich College Seoul opened its innovatively designed building in September 2010 and boasts state-of-the-art educational facilities in the heart of one of Asia’s most dynamic cities. The College has expanded to become a through school offering places to 700 students from Reception to Year 13 age groups, nurturing all aspects of each child’s intellectual, physical, creative and social development. Dulwich fully embraces standards of academic, sporting and artistic excellence in an international setting, whilst recognising the rich and varied culture of its host country.

Our student population benefits from a rich international and multi-cultural mix, with 40 different nationalities represented. Having successfully passed its accreditation visits, Dulwich College Seoul is now a full member of both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and WASC (Western Association of School and Colleges).

As an accredited CIE and EdExcel exam centre, the College offers the widest choice of IGCSE courses in Seoul. The College is an authorised IB World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme since September 2015.

There is an emphasis on developing well-rounded individuals with a thirst for learning and a sense of role as responsible citizens in a changing world. Dulwich is a ‘learning community’ with teachers embracing learning theories and action research to shape innovation.

The curriculum is based on an enhanced version of the English Early Years Foundation Stage framework and National Curriculum with suitable modifications made to take into account the diverse make-up of the school population. Mandarin is a compulsory and high profile subject throughout the College, with a flexible and comprehensive curriculum that caters to everyone from total beginners to bilingual students.

The co-curricular dimension of the College is exceptionally strong. Music, art and sport, in particular, are thriving, with regular sports fixtures, school concerts and productions. All members of staff are expected to contribute to the co-curricular programme and students in the Junior and Senior Schools are encouraged to take two activities each term. Educational visits and residential trips in the form of ‘adventurous journeys’ in Senior School are integral parts of the curriculum, and included in school fees.

The campus resides in a wonderful part of Seoul, in a street of churches, schools, a post office, council offices, convenient shops and a police station – it feels like a Dulwich Village in Seoul! The school enjoys excellent resources and facilities for its Primary and Senior School students. Each classroom from Reception upwards is equipped with a digital projector and interactive Smart Board. Specialist rooms include Art Rooms, an ICT suite, a kiln room, gymnasium, roof top sports and recreation areas, an indoor swimming pool, a black box theatre, libraries, outdoor play areas, a low-ropes challenge course, an all-weather sports field, a purpose-built theatre and self-contained suites of music rooms.

The College draws upon 400 years of experience in education. Our founding school in London, Dulwich College, provides expertise, resources and a rigorous set of academic standards to which we must adhere. In addition, close ties with our family of schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Zhuhai, and Singapore provide us with further access to resources and enhanced professional learning and development. As well as the excellent career prospects offered by Dulwich College Seoul, teachers will be well placed to subsequently move to our other Colleges, experiencing the chance to work in another country whilst remaining within the Dulwich family. The power of our vision to become ‘One Family of Schools’ means that staff can be involved in group-wide events such as the Dulwich Olympiad, Dulwich Games, Dulwich Festival of Music, MADD (Music, Art, Drama, Dance), Shackleton Lecture, Shakespeare Festival, and Diversity visits.

Teachers are mainly recruited from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, North America and international schools throughout the world.  The remuneration package is generous with excellent accommodation, comprehensive medical coverage and other benefits, including freight, annual flight and living allowances, as well as free tuition at the school for up to two children. Seoul is at the forefront of technological innovation whilst preserving its vibrant historical traditions and enjoying a pleasantly clean environment for a city of its size. The city regularly hosts world-class events in sports, music and the arts. Dulwich is situated in Seocho District, just south of the Han River within easy reach of the city’s many attractions and is well served by affordable and efficient public transport services. It will be possible to live well, explore the hidden treasures of a country ignored by mass tourism, whilst being the perfect jump-off point for visiting China, Japan and other neighbouring Asian countries.
