The Job
We are seeking to appoint al Graduate Boarding Tutor looking for her first role in an exciting and challenging environment. The successful candidate will have a good Drama / Performing arts degree, have a passion for the Arts as a whole and have a desire to enhance our pupils' education. The role involves supporting the Arts staff teams and supervising learners in the Arts areas of the School, particularly the Drama Department. There are opportunities to support lessons within the curriculum, extra-curricular work and run clubs and activities within the extended school day or in the boarding house.
The Expressive Arts at Malvern St James
Music, Drama, Art and Design and Dance all fall under the banner of ‘The Expressive Arts’ and all offer far reaching opportunities for enrichment activities beyond the curriculum.
Drama is taught within the Curriculum throughout the School, from the Prep Department to GCSE and A Level. In addition, girls may opt to take Speech and Drama Lessons, where the aim is to improve communication skills or to develop a love of drama, acting, theatre and literature. Examinations are offered, such as LAMDA grades, and there is an annual Speech and Drama Showcase. We also offer numerous Drama clubs and put on shows throughout the year.
There is regular collaboration with the other subjects within the Expressive Arts. We work closely with the Music Department through shows and cross curricular work, particularly musical productions, either whole school or KS3. Curriculum Music Lessons are offered throughout the school and many girls play an instrument or learn to sing, joining an ensemble, the orchestra or one of the school choirs.
Dance lessons on a one-to-one or small group level are available throughout the school, subject to parental consent. From time to time we host special dance workshops, where professional dancers come in to teach specific styles of dancing to large groups of girls.
During the Autumn Term, there is a senior whole-School production alternating between a musical or a play. This year we produced "Chicago" with a company of over eighty girls. Everyone is encouraged to become involved, whether they are a singer, a dancer, an actor, an artist, interested in stage management, direction, costume making or set building. The major Preparatory Department production is in the Spring Term, incorporating girls from throughout the Prep School. This year the production is "Wind in the Willows".
It is expected that the successful candidate will inspire our learners within class and will participate fully in the rich and diverse extra-curricular Arts life of the School, according to their skills and strengths. They will be committed to the boarding life of the school, through their evening and overnight work in the boarding houses.

About Malvern St James
Malvern St James Girls’ School is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of the Malvern Hills and is a leading independent boarding and day school for girls aged 3-18. Our values today reflect those of our founding schools, set up in the nineteenth century by pioneering proponents of women’s education. In this inspirational setting, MSJ continues a fine heritage of academic rigour, outstanding enrichment and leadership opportunities, and preparing girls for rewarding careers and lives beyond school.
MSJ is an exceptional place for learning and living. Every girl matters to us, and our size (at around 450 pupils) means that we can offer an individually tailored education. Our focus is on inspiring teaching to deliver excellent academic results; and equally on encouraging intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, considered risk-taking and collaboration that universities and employers will value. Our enrichment programme is as long as it is broad, and has something to fire the imagination of every individual: clubs for budding engineers and scientists, extra-curricular languages, drama, music, Leiths, journalism, photography, sport of every kind, Young Enterprise, Debating and Model United Nations … to name but a few.
Life at MSJ is underpinned by first class pastoral support which makes us a happy and friendly community, relaxed yet purposeful, with a real sense of family. When girls reach the end of their time here, they are thoroughly prepared to embrace life’s challenges. The diverse list of graduate courses at the most prestigious institutions and the competitive career paths that girls go on to is testament to MSJ’s culture of ambition and achievement. Our alumnae network helps our community to forge valuable links for life.
As a school we have a roughly equal number of day girls and boarders, allowing us to offer the best of both worlds and a very flexible boarding programme. We have full, weekly and flexi boarding options, designed to meet the needs of modern family lives. Our position in the town of Great Malvern, situated in the heart of England, means we benefit from excellent transport links and cultural opportunities all around the UK, including a direct train service from London.
Our girls work hard but have fun on the way, making lifelong friends and memories. Please do come and see for yourselves what makes MSJ tick and meet our happy, poised and confident girls and young women, who are free to be themselves and find the things which will instigate a life-long passion for learning.
