The Design Technology Department at Salesian
We are a vibrant and thriving department with a passion for the teaching and learning of Design Technology. The department currently consists of 8 members of teaching staff and 3 technicians.
We pride ourselves on striving for exceptional results across the board and last year were pleased to average 97% 4+ and 73% 7+ at GCSE Design Technology and 100% 4+ and 92% 7+ in GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. We are passionate about evaluating and improving our pedagogy in order to offer our students the best possible opportunities for them to develop their skills in design and manufacture using a wide variety of materials and processes.
At Key Stage Three students experience a broad Technology curriculum that includes Food, Textiles, Graphics, Product Design, Architecture Skills and Resistant Materials, taught in mixed ability groups on half termly rotations. Year 10 and Year 11 students currently select one of four technology options, DT Graphics, DT Resistant Materials, Art Textiles or Food Preparation and Nutrition. We teach the AQA GCSE Specification for DT and Art Textiles and the WJEC Specification for Food Prep & nutrition. At Key Stage Five we currently offer 4 courses including Product Design, Textiles, Graphics and 3D. We aim to offer consistently in the level outstanding teaching at all levels and expect every child to aim for 9’s.
As a Salesian school we are committed to extra-curricular projects. In the past we are proud to have won prizes at the SATRO Festival of Engineering. Students have also had high levels of success representing the school in the Rotary Club Young Chef competition. A variety of educational visits have been used to enhance and enrich the curriculum with visits to Lyon, Victoria & Albert Museum, Design museum, Laverstock Park Farm, Mulberry Factory and Borough Market.
We are committed to teacher training and currently have a SCITT trainee placed with us. We are also always keen to work with ECTs as we firmly believe that we benefit as much from their fresh ideas and creativity as they do our guidance and experience.
The successful candidate will ideally specialise in delivering Textiles, Food or Graphics KS3. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work within a strong, successful department, with potential to teach Sixth Form and would suit either an enthusiastic ECT or a more experienced professional looking to further their expertise in an outstanding school.
We are extremely proud of our department, which has state of the art facilities, and strongly encourage a visit for any candidates considering the role. We look forward to welcoming a colleague who is as passionate about Design as we are!

Appointments at Salesian
Information for Candidates
Thank you for your interest in the positions currently being advertised at Salesian School. I would like to take this opportunity to share some thoughts with you.
Salesian is a co-educational 11-18 Catholic comprehensive school and part of the Xavier Catholic Education Trust. The school ethos is based on the work of Don Bosco, a Salesian priest. Community and great relations are central to our work. As a consequence, both students and staff are happy, positive and enjoy their time at school.
Standards at the school are outstanding and students achieve exceptionally well. In last year’s GCSE examinations 90% of students gained five or more standard passes including English & Maths and our Progress 8 was +0.95. The pass rate at A’ level was 100% with 66% A*-B grades.
The school has 1650 students and is situated on two sites approximately one mile apart, near to the centre of Chertsey. The main school is situated at Guildford Road and our Sixth Form College has 350 students on its own site at Highfield Road.
A great deal of emphasis is placed on extra-curricular life at Salesian and outside the formal curriculum there are numerous opportunities for students to take part in a wide range of activities - drama, sport, music, exchanges, away days, Duke of Edinburgh, retreats and trips.
We work hard to ensure that staff and students are well looked after but we also set exceedingly high expectations of everyone at the school and underperformance is always challenged. When you get the balance right between challenge and support you get great teaching, when you have great teaching the school becomes heavily-oversubscribed and when this is the case parents believe in what you are trying to do and support you in doing it. All of this results in us having the privilege of working with children who are, on the whole, an absolute delight!
Our last Ofsted Inspection was in September of 2013 when we were judged to be “outstanding” in all categories. We were obviously delighted with this recognition and are all very proud of our achievements which are a great tribute to the staff and students who have worked so hard to enable us to reach this point.
Salesian was designated as a Teaching School in September 2014 in recognition of our track record of success in training teachers and supporting schools in difficulty. The Teaching School offers a range of exciting opportunities for staff to engage in professional development and school-to-school support activities and from 2015 we have been accrediting our own trainee teachers as part of the Teach South East SCITT partnership.
Regardless of all this, we don’t think we’ve got it cracked; the challenge now is to keep improving on what we do. Are you the person to help us continue on this journey?
Candidates are welcome to contact the school to find out more information about specific departments or pay us a visit. We take recruitment very seriously and want to do all we can to find the best staff for our students.
The ideal candidates will be energetic, enthusiastic, ambitious and excellent practitioners. We would expect at least two years’ hard work and good service. In exchange we will prepare you for the next step in your career.
I believe Salesian is a fantastic place to work and I am excited about the prospect of appointing colleagues with whom we can work closely in order to drive the school forward. There are great opportunities here for the right candidates to provide a high quality service for our community and make a real difference to children’s futures. I very much look forward to meeting you.

About Salesian School
Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.
It is at the foundation of our values to:
- Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
- Ensure relationships are key
- Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
- Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values
We promise parents and students that we will:
- Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
- Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
- Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world
We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.
We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.
We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.
Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.
We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.
We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
