Job overview

Through our programme, you will work in The Early Years. You will make sure children learn through play, are kept active and that they are looked after. You will also help children develop social and practical skills.

The National School Apprenticeship programme presents a unique opportunity to start a career working in a school. You will receive comprehensive training throughout the apprenticeship and ongoing support from the school.

Whilst on the Early Years apprenticeship, you will work closely with children in their learning and development. You will help to plan and carry out activities and lesson plans to motivate children and help them learn through inventive and imaginative use of resources.
At the end of your apprenticeship you will achieve the nationally recognised Early Years Educator qualification, as well as valuable work experience, that will provide you with the best chance possible of being offered a full-time role within a school or business.

Below is a summary of your key roles and responsibilities:

  • Help to motivate children and develop their learning abilities.
  • Contribute to the provision of a secure environment for the children to learn.
  • Assisting in developing teaching resources.
  • Helping to create visual aids to stimulate learning.
  • Help to make use of resources in an engaging way.
  • Assisting with children's development of personal, social and language skills;
  • Supporting and helping to develop the children's basic skills
  • Working with the children in order to help develop their curiosity and expand upon their knowledge.
  • Work as part of The Early Years Foundation Stage team.
  • Be aware of and comply with the policies and procedures relating to child protection, equality and diversity, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

You will be working alongside a range of experienced Early Years practitioners to supervise and support pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning. During lessons, you’ll work together with the class teacher to support pupils with classroom activities and help to manage behaviour. Excellent communication and enthusiasm will be key in supporting all pupils to progress, achieve and overcome any issues. You will support all areas of the curriculum. The role will require you to support pupils in respect of the Early Years curriculum, as directed by the teacher, support pupils to understand instructions, becoming involved in teaching small groups, supporting the class teacher and the key worker, supporting children in learning through play, supporting with the Continuous Provision, be involved in the assessment/ observation opportunities throughout the day, prepare the classroom for lessons, and clear away afterwards, helping children to gain independence as appropriate, at mealtimes, using the toilet, transition from the classroom to outdoor spaces including at the beginning and at the end of the day and also supporting with the supervision at lunchtimes, have involvement in planning opportunities with the Early Years team, contributing to maintain a positive, vibrant environment in the Early Years Setting and to undertake other tasks and duties to support in all aspects of the day. In addition, you will be required to accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and other out-of-school activities. There may be times when you will have to work in other year groups to support the delivery of the curriculum.

Skills Required  
Willing and able to complete all learning and assessment requirements of the relevant framework
Able to establish good working relationships with staff, pupils parents and outside agencies
Have an understanding of the Islamic Ethos of the School. Lead by example. Professional adult within the Olive Preston Family.

Qualifications Required  
Hold GCSE Grade C or above in English and Grade C or above in Maths.

Important Other Information  
Prior to interview you are required to complete online initial assessments in Maths, English & ICT. These are called BKSB. If you’re shortlisted please print out the results and take them with you to the interview. You’ll receive an email from NST Head Office with instructions.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.30 per hour (From October 1st 2016 this will be increasing by 3% to £3.40 per hour). This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
