We are looking to recruit an experienced Educational Support Assistant to join our SEN Team.  In this individual we want to see drive and determination, someone who is proactive, courageous, open-minded, a self-starter, who is enthusiastic and above all enjoys working with young people. We are on a journey to become a Trauma Informed school and as such we want colleagues who embrace this way of working and who can appreciate the links between trauma and behaviour. As an Educational Support Assistant, you will work collaboratively with our SENCo, members of our Personalised Learning Team and Teachers to provide support to our students to help them identify barriers to learning and work with them to achieve their full potential.

This role would suit someone who enjoys working with young people, who believes it is a privilege to be a part of their journey into adulthood, and who understands the challenges faced by young people growing up in today's world.

Applicants do require Maths and English GCSE grade C/4 or above to qualify for this role.  Refresher and ongoing training is available for this role.

This is a key time to join Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and develop a truly coherent provision for our students.  You will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff who are welcoming, courageous, open-minded and supportive. It is a particularly exciting time to join the school as we embed our new curriculum and continue to develop our Trauma Informed and Restorative Practices. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of this transformational change and we are looking for someone who is creative, dynamic, and willing to embrace this challenge head on.

When joining Spen Valley you are entering a supportive environment where we pride ourselves in offering a wide range of CPD opportunities including a bespoke CPD package through the National College.  Being a member of Red Kite Alliance, we receive support, advice and training from some of the most successful schools in Yorkshire.  We encourage our staff not only in their involvement in various activities throughout the school but also to be proactive and come up with new and fresh ideas to engage and enthuse both our staff and students.

Staff Benefits include:

  • Employee Healthcare (including physiotherapy referrals, counselling and lifestyle advice)
  • Pension (West Yorkshire Pension Fund)
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Staff Supervision (a personal & confidential counselling & support service)
  • Varied Staff Wellbeing Initiatives
  • The opportunity to work with colleagues and specialist support across the Red Kite Teaching School Hub

This role is a 30-hour contract term time plus 1 day, with the opportunity to sign up to extra days helping out with holiday activities or for additional training.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check. A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.

The closing date for this role is 9am, Thursday 16th December 2021 - please submit an application letter and completed application form.

If you require further information about the role, please contact Tracey Bland, Business Manager & HR Lead via email hr@spenvalleyhighschool.co.uk on 01924 405451.   For more information about the school please go to our website - www.spenvalleyhighschool.co.uk.

Our school:

We are an oversubscribed, 11-16 comprehensive school situated in North Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Having been awarded ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted in March 2022, this is a key time for Spen Valley High School as we build upon our many strengths and continue to develop a truly coherent and high-quality provision for our students. In this role you will work alongside a team of highly professional & dedicated staff, who are welcoming, courageous, open-minded, and supportive.

We are privileged to have been part of the Alex Timpson Programme, and our commitment to becoming a Trauma Informed School was nationally recognised in November 2021, when we were awarded the Attachment Research Community (Secondary) Award.

What makes Spen Valley High School different?

We are proud to be a Trauma Informed School and are looking for someone who fully supports our vision and approach. We know that all young people have been disadvantaged by the Covid pandemic but alongside this, we have a significant number of students in our school with complex backgrounds. These young people not only require, but deserve courageous and resilient teachers who can balance the teaching of their subject to a high standard, with helping their students to navigate their way through the challenges they face. We make no excuses about our approach; but this is not about ‘dumbing down’, far from it, we want colleagues with high expectations but who can manage students through outstanding teaching and developing strong relationships. We require someone with good emotional intelligence and who will show warmth, compassion and empathy to all our students.

We pride ourselves on being ethical leaders, and leading with integrity. When joining Spen Valley you are entering an environment that balances professional challenge with support and kindness. We expect our colleagues to work hard, and go the ‘extra mile’ for our students, but in doing so we recognise that additional support is sometimes necessary and our Trauma Informed and relational approach extends to the way we work with our staff. We offer a wide range of CPD opportunities, including a bespoke CPD package that genuinely meets the needs of each colleague. As a member of the Red Kite Teaching Alliance, we receive high-quality support, advice and training and work closely with colleagues from some of the most successful schools in Yorkshire. We encourage our staff not only in their involvement in various activities throughout the school, but also to be proactive and develop new and fresh ideas to engage and enthuse both our staff and students.
