Job overview

Ark Blacklands Primary Academy

Ark Blacklands Primary Academy is a popular and over-subscribed school in the heart of Hastings.  It was recently graded as ‘outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted and has a proven track record of raising standards for all pupils, particularly our most vulnerable.

We are a school that is committed to providing our pupils with the very best educational opportunities, by having the very highest expectations of ourselves as a staff team. We are now seeking a resilient and robust individual to join our fantastic team within the inclusion department as an Engagement and Learning Mentor.

The role involves working with small groups of children with challenging social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. These pupils may have complex emotional and behavioural needs that must be carefully managed, and experience of working with these kinds of learners would be desirable.

Ideal candidates will:

  • demonstrate an ability to be flexible in their approach
  • be able to establish meaningful positive relationships quickly
  • have a well-established range of strategies for coping with sometimes challenging situations
  • guide the pupils’ learning towards independence
  • be committed to Ark Blacklands’ ethos of high expectations
  • have the resolve to make a real difference to the lives of pupils.

Much of the work with these pupils is delivered via an ‘Alternative Provision’ programme supported by the Local Authority’s Behaviour Support Team, and will involve working alongside a second Engagement and Learning mentor to provide a range of activities that not only support the children’s academic learning, but also allow them to build their own resilience and abilities to self-manage their emotional state and behaviour, with the ultimate goal being full time reintegration into their mainstream classroom setting.

Many of these pupils also benefit from accessing our Outdoor Learning Area, and so experience of or a genuine interest in working and running this type of setting, or any similar ‘Forest School’ style provision is desirable.

The work the successful candidate will carry out can be challenging and complex at times, but is also highly rewarding and you will be well supported.

We offer competitive rates of pay, high quality professional development and encourage our staff to be creative and forward thinking in their approach to their work. The successful candidate will also be able to access the latest training in our local ‘Thrive Approach’ programme, which is being rolled out across a large number of schools in the local area following high levels of success in helping with turning around the life chances of many learners across the country.

Interested in this exciting opportunity? Please contact Mrs. Gasson on 01424 429279 or info@arkblacklandsprimary.org to arrange a visit to the school.

If you would like to discuss the role or have any technical queries, please contact the recruitment team on 0203 116 6345 or recruitment@arkonline.org.

Interviews: Thursday 9th March 2017
Hours: 30 hours per week, term time only

Ark Blacklands Primary Academy is committed to safeguarding children; successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Ark Blacklands Primary Academy joined the Ark network in 2014, we are a 3 form entry school, increasing to 90 pupils in each year group, ranging from Early Years and Foundation Stage through to Year 6.

Our vision for our pupils is that every child who attends our school will be academically and socially equipped for success at secondary school and, beyond that, in a career of their choice or university. At Ark Blacklands Primary Academy we have high expectations for all our pupils. We are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to ensure each of our pupils succeeds. To achieve their ambitious goals, our pupils and staff work hard and have high aspirations.

Our staff make a tremendous effort to get to know each pupil and provide the very best care they can for them. The school has put staff development at the heart of its school improvement, ensuring that all staff have the support, training and opportunities they need to develop. We work closely with our Ark colleagues at Ark Little Ridge Primary Academy to share best practice and strive for academic excellence together. We offer our staff at Ark Blacklands twice as many training days as standard and teachers are actively encouraged to participate in training programmes to further their career.

As a school, our focus is always on the best possible outcomes for our young people. That is why we are constantly reviewing our practices to ensure that teachers can concentrate on teaching and students on learning. This includes a rigorous behaviour policy.
