Job overview

Students at The Leigh UTC “are proud to attend a school that is realising its vision of ‘developing STEM professionals for the future global market’” Ofsted, 2022.

The Leigh UTC opened in 2014 with state-of-the-art facilities. We are the first UTC to join a multi-academy trust, to become an IB World School, to be built in Kent and among the first Academies in the UK to offer T-levels and Level 3 and 4 apprenticeships. We were the first UTC to open from Year 7 and have been oversubscribed in all year groups ever since, now serving over 800 young people from Kent, Medway and South-East London. We are a pioneering Academy and are looking for like-minded, ambitious people who can make great things happen for the young people in our community.

We have an exciting opportunity for a hardworking individual to undertake a Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship. Whether you are a school leaver or more experienced Engineering Technician, this programme will offer you the chance to learn new skills and get ahead in your career.

Our successful learner will be involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work, operating machining components from specialist materials and using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi-axis CNC machine tools centres. You will be able set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. When using CNC equipment, you will be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations units, you will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment or programme to ensure components meet the required specification.

Applicants should be professional, personable and committed to providing an excellent service on behalf of the organisation, and above all else our appointed learners will have a positive work ethic and can-do attitude. If you're as excited by this opportunity as we are, we'd love to hear from you!

This role is offered as a 42-month apprenticeship contract and our successful candidates will work towards a nationally-recognised Level 3 Engineering Technician (Machinist) qualification, delivered by LAT Apprenticeships.  Click here to read more about LAT Apprenticeships.

Working with us: Having opened in September 2014 with state-of-the-art facilities originally for Key Stage 4 and 5, The Leigh UTC provides an exciting, innovative, business-led, problem-solving curriculum, enabling students to achieve relevant academic and work-related qualifications and transferable skills for future destinations. The most unique feature of The Leigh UTC is its business ethos that are emphasised by our STEM rich curriculum and relationships with local and national employers.

In September 2017, following the request of the Department for Education due to our continued success, The Leigh UTC marked history by expanding its student intake to incorporate Key Stage 3 – the first UTC in England to do this. Furthermore, being the first UTC to have IB World School Status has enabled us to develop strong international links. Having IB Status has  enabled us to further develop the mid-years programme (MYP) for our Key Stage 3 students and thus providing a joined-up pathway from ages 11 to 19.  The overarching mission of the Inspiration Academy is to develop curious, academically-skilled young people who aspire to be principled, compassionate learners. Our curriculum strives to create students who are self-motivated, competent, willing to take risks and lifelong learners.

Our key successes and features that our successful candidate can be part of are as follows;

  • The promotion of pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding.
  • Pupils, including the disadvantaged and those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, catch up from previous underachievement and make strong progress in a range of subjects and disciplines
  • Application to learning is often exemplary.
  • The Leigh UTC makes a real difference for its pupils and surrounding area. Pupils become motivated to find and follow their passions. They leave well equipped to succeed in engineering and related technical and design careers and contribute to the economy.
  • The Principal, with his leaders and staff team, model a high-quality working environment. This rubs off on pupils, who value the supportive ethos, work-like atmosphere.
  • Our student destinations since opening reflect the value of a UTC education, with the vast majority going into STEM careers and no NEETs

Our Principal, Governors, teaching and support staff believe wholeheartedly in creating opportunities for lifelong success for our young people and believe that exam success is just one aspect in achieving this. We deliver amazing experiences for students whilst not compromising on outcomes. Our teamwork allows us to be greater than the sum of our parts - join us to achieve more than you thought possible.

Curriculum is king and we do things a little differently to other schools or colleges because we believe the most effective way to educate our students is to make our learning more hands-on.
