Job overview

The British International School of New York (BIS-NY) is a dynamic and nurturing community educating children in a stunning waterside campus in Manhattan. We are proud to welcome families from around forty countries to our school, which delivers a distinct and innovative curriculum, combining the International Baccalaureate and English National Curriculum. Alongside this rigorous and engaging curriculum, the school is also committed to providing a broad and inspiring wider programme in Sport, the Creative and Performing Arts and Community Service. The warmth of relations across the school and close, constructive co-operation with families are other essential ingredients in what makes the school such a great place to work and learn. September 2016 was the tenth anniversary of BIS-NY and this post arises because of the continued growth and development of the school. The school opened a new Upper School programme from September 2018 offering Cambridge International IGCSE and A Level courses. We are looking for talented, committed and enthusiastic individuals to join our exceptional team of staff and help make BIS-NY even better.

This is an opportunity to join our team of excellent teachers to help deliver a high quality, inquiry-based programme. The Inclusion Department at BIS-NY plays a critical role in helping to support all children to access learning, gain in confidence and experience success as a student. As an IB World school we are looking for a creative and dynamic teacher willing to model the IB Learner Profile and contribute to the daily life of a diverse international community. Experience with the IB or English National Curriculum would be an advantage as would international experience with students working at different levels and with a range of needs. All staff are also encouraged to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school.

We are fortunate to welcome students from many different backgrounds and countries to BIS-NY and this position is within the team of staff working to help each individual to settle quickly into the school. We seek to provide tailored support and appropriate language-based and other support to enable students to engage with their learning and peers in the school. The successful candidate will have the experience, knowledge, creativity and adaptability to work with individuals and colleagues to help students enjoy and make the most of their time in the school. Kindness, patience and a sense of humour are also valuable qualities for the role. The precise balance between EAL and wider learning support, as well as the age range with which the candidate most often works will be partly determined by the prior experience and skills of the successful candidate and where they can best complement and add to the expertise of the rest of the team.
