JRCS

The Jo Richardson Community School believes in working together to ensure success for all. We support and value all teachers so that they may focus on best serving our community in learning, widening opportunity and meeting the needs of young students. People love working here because they know that as a community our contributions make an important impact on children’s lives.

We are recruiting for a Lead Teacher for Key Stage 5 English Literature and seek a candidate who can demonstrate

·       a driving moral purpose of unquestionable ambition for all students.

·       they are a teacher who inspires, demands rigour and can showcase a love for literature.

·       they lead with clarity, high standards, consistency and resilience in the face of difficulty.

·       a model for developing their own and other's teaching.

·       an understanding of effective use of assessment in improving learning, particularly classroom-based Formative Assessment.

·       a commitment to lead ethically, collaboratively and sustainably.

·       a belief in the power of literature to improve people’s lives.

·       an ethos of service to ensure inclusivity of success.

The English department emanates the values of expanding and educating the imagination so that young people can envision and realise greater possibilities. We are looking for a teacher with a passion for literature, a drive to improve curriculum and a leader who aligns and embodies our values to lead on the Key Stage 5 English Literature Curriculum.

In charge of all aspects of Key Stage 5 Literature, you will lead teachers in delivering a curriculum ranging from Jacobean Drama to Post-WWII American Drama. The subject is popular at A-Level and student passion for the subject can be reflected in both their attainment as well as the number of students who progress to studying the subject at degree level.

As a leader in the department, beyond the scope of KS5, you will be part of a team that collaboratively contributes to the development of curriculum in KS3 and KS4. You will lead on cascading subject knowledge, enriching the pedagogy and building the leadership capacity of all teachers on our team. You will be a leader who ensures that all teachers are equipped to support all students in accessing the power of literature at all stages of their learning.

You will be joining a team that improves their curriculum continuously, interrogates their pedagogical knowledge and expands their collective ability to support and challenge one another to offer the best possible education for the community we serve.

We work hard to ensure staff well-being remains an essential part of our culture. We are dedicated to the health, growth and development of teachers within the department and the school community. The best teams are the most diverse teams and our culture reflects the plurality of our surrounding community. We thus particularly welcome applications from all the communities we serve including applications from Black, Asian and ethnic minorities as well as working class applicants familiar with Barking and Dagenham.

If you are seeking a school wherein you could make an impact on the lives of the students of Barking and Dagenham, if you are a creative, dynamic and enthusiastic teacher, if you are looking to work collaboratively to develop your own practice alongside the teaching practice of others, if you know that learning occurs in a calm, well-ordered environment with carefully planned moments of discussion, reading and writing, then this role and our school might be for you.

If you are looking to share your values, your passion, your professional rigour and your drive to lead people, we would be happy to meet you and hear about your vision and your strategic outlook for leading the KS5 English Curriculum at Jo Richardson School.

We pride ourselves on being a truly inclusive school and this is actively underpinned by our motto ‘Success for All’. Academic rigour runs alongside a commitment to extra-curricular activities and we offer our students a wide range of opportunities to pursue their studies both inside and outside the classroom. Our extensive range of extra-curricular activities, together with trips to Rome, Berlin, France, Borneo, the WWI trenches in Ypres, skiing in the USA, and our highly regarded Duke of Edinburgh programme, is second to none and ensures all students get the chance to extend their academic, social and cultural experiences outside of the classroom. New staff are encouraged to participate in trips.

The school’s most recent OFSTED report described the school as good with outstanding leadership and governance and outstanding spiritual, moral, social and cultural provision; this judgement was reinforced at our last Section 8 inspection in November 2017.

The school prides itself on providing staff with the most appropriate and effective support to ensure that their professional development needs are fully met and that there is a high level of challenge in the opportunities they are offered. Wednesday afternoons are devoted to CPD and the school has a very strong record of developing staff; nearly a third of the Heads of Department and Heads of Year joined the school as NQTs, as did five members of the Senior Leadership Team. Please visit the “join us as a member of staff” page of our award-winning website to learn more about what makes JRCS such a special place to work.

High quality induction, including a two-week ECT school-based immersion programme in July, is available to all staff at JRCS as part of our strong commitment to continuing professional development.

Please log onto our website www.jorichardson.org.uk for further details about the school, this post, a link to our recent Ofsted report and the application process itself.

All applications should be made online by clicking the ‘Apply Now' link. Please contact Margaret Stone on recruitment@jorichardson.org.uk if you wish to arrange a visit to the school.

JRCS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS disclosure.

Vision of the School

At The Jo Richardson Community School we are committed to reaching the highest standards in everything we do. We want all our students to achieve the best possible examination results as well as have the opportunity to take part in the widest range of extra-curricular activities. We strongly believe this can only happen in a well-ordered and respectful environment where only the highest standards of behaviour are acceptable, and where all our teachers are fully committed and able to ensure our goals become a reality.

Success For All

Central to our work is the motto ‘Success For All’ which underpins our belief that every individual has the opportunity to gain high quality academic qualifications. These enable students to progress to college, university or a good job when they leave us. The curriculum we offer provides both a wide range of traditional academic subjects as well as more practical work-related courses.

We also want our students to develop opportunities to succeed outside the classroom. Our extra-curricular provision provides a range of opportunities for achievement that will develop confidence and build self-esteem. Our student council also plays an important role within the school, and is just one example of how we seek to develop our students’ leadership skills.

None of this can be achieved, however, if the ethos isn’t right. We believe it is our responsibility to make sure students feel happy and secure at school. We do not tolerate any disruptive behaviour that has an effect upon the progress of others.

We operate a bullying and behaviour policy based on zero tolerance. In the rare event that a student is involved in bullying or in disrupting lessons they are automatically excluded from school and not allowed back into circulation until we are confident that problems will not recur. We make no apology for the hard line we take in this respect – students need to know they can come to school free from the fear of intimidation, and where their lessons will be focused on achieving academic success.
