Job overview

Newhaven School- Kings Park Campus:  English Teacher

King’s Park offers English to GCSE and Functional Skills and has the potential to offer to A level. We are a rapidly and successfully establishing school in the Royal Borough of Greenwich which meets the needs of young people with diagnoses of Autism and mental health needs. Our school is a happy place where nurture and the development of students’ life and personal skills have equal status with their academic outcomes. Our students tell us they value the school and show this by attending more than they ever have. Feedback from parents is glowing with high levels of engagement with our parental work. Staff enjoy the difference they make and the small class sizes with extensive professional support.

You will ideally have experience with high functioning youngsters on the spectrum but more importantly will be an outstanding teacher with a can do attitude, a sense of humour and the resilience to work with our challenging cohort. You will also be excited by the prospect of working in a dynamic, forward looking environment where risks are encouraged in order to achieve results. You will be trained to teach within KS2-5 and will ideally but not essentially have experience of working with young people with ASD using specific interventions such as TEACCH, SPELL framework and SCERTS. You will receive the training you need as a tutor to assess and develop your tutor group’s Wellbeing Skills in the areas of emotional regulation, social communication, learning and independence.

The staff at King’s Park are determined to give our students the best opportunities possible to become successful, responsible citizens with bright futures. We opened in a refitted building, with state of the art ICT and other facilities, in May 2016 and currently have 48 students on roll in years 7-14. By September we will have up to 55 students as our first cohort graduates.

We are looking for:

· Outstanding classroom practitioners with the ability to inspire others and a commitment to high standards

· A proven record of good academic results with students of all abilities

· Innovation and an ability to inspire students with a range of needs

· Preferably experience of working with students with ASD with experience of specific interventions outlined above

· Resilience

Newhaven Pupil Referral Unit is a high performing and complex alternative provision set in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We believe in providing opportunities for students to become independent and well-rounded individuals ready to embrace all that life has to offer, removing the barriers to learning that have hindered their progress up to now.

At Newhaven we have an extremely effective team of dedicated staff to support the progress of every child, including specialist LSAs and HLTAs, Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and CAMHS link workers. Our most recent Ofsted report notes that Newhaven pupils “benefit from a committed team of professionals who enjoy coming to work. This is because they feel valued and are supported to work together to improve pupils’ outcomes”.

Newhaven has a positive "can do" attitude, believing that the sky is the limit, and we think creatively and innovatively to meet the needs of our learners and school community. Our examination results and student destinations are a testament to this.
