About Downlands Community School

Headteacher - Mark Wignall

Downlands Community School is a mixed, comprehensive, non-denominational secondary for students aged 11-16 in Hassocks, West Sussex at the foot of the beautiful South Downs, 6 miles north of Brighton. It is a state community school with a governing body of 15 volunteers. The school currently provides 1,200 secondary places when fully subscribed.

The school has undergone extensive renovation, with a state-of-the-art teaching block, IT rooms, Music Suite and Dance Studio. Headteacher Mark Wignall was appointed in September 2016. Our Amphitheatre opened in 2019 and offers the potential for multiple different uses, from outdoor lessons and school productions to rehearsal space for local amateur dramatics groups.

Values and vision

Downlands Community School places learning at the heart of everything that we do. It focuses on valuing the surrounding environment, preparing students for 21st-century society through innovation and creativity, and educating students socially and emotionally, while striving for self-improvement and exceeding expectations. The school's aims are supported by the Downlands Association, a group of staff and parents who raise funds through a range of different events.

Students benefit from extensive opportunities for sport and PE, with access to a gym, sports hall, astroturf football pitch, fitness suite and dance studio. The school is particularly proud of the extra-curricular activities offered, including music, chess, science, technology and creative arts clubs, English clubs and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
