Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated candidate to act as an academic and pastoral mentor to a group of Highclare GCSE students who are also part of an elite sporting performance programme (EPPP). The role requires supporting students in their preparation for GCSE examinations and being a key point of liaison between the School and external organisations. The students in question come from a variety of backgrounds to Highclare School in Y9 and Y10 and, due to sporting commitments, are absent from School a great deal. They need specific support in transition to an independent school, managing workload and tutoring support for their GCSE subjects, particularly English and Maths. This full-time role is an excellent opportunity for a tutor passionate about making a difference in our students’ academic journey. This is a one-year fixed-term contract with a view to becoming a permanent role.

Day-to-day role:

  • Conduct tutoring sessions with small groups of students in both Years 10 and 11, focusing on GCSE exam preparation for both English and Maths (the ability to support in Science as well would be advantageous).
  • With support from classroom teachers, develop engaging, interactive sessions and learning activities tailored to the students’ needs.
  • Support in assessing the students’ progress and adapt teaching methods to maximise learning outcomes.
  • Be the main liaison point between Highclare School, parents/guardians, and external organisations so all are kept informed on progress, organisation and scheduling of the education programme.

Required skills and personal specification:

  • Proven track record of teaching or tutoring the UK English and Maths curriculum up to GCSE level.
  • The ability to create a supportive and motivating learning environment.
  • The ability to communicate well between stakeholders involved in the programme.
  • Reliable mode of transportation to ensure punctuality and consistency.
  • The ability to be flexible with working hours throughout the week and during school holiday times if needed.

Staff benefits include:

  • A competitive salary with a pension scheme (defined contribution scheme).
  • Professional development opportunities, including a generous and supportive CPD policy.
  • Small class sizes and excellent pupil behaviour.
  • The opportunity for innovative and creative teaching and learning opportunities without the pressures of national testing.
  • Generous fee discount for staff children.
  • Free flu vaccines.
  • Long service recognition.
  • Salary sacrifice Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Free parking.
  • Staff social events.

Closing date: Noon on Tuesday 12th March 2024; however, we reserve the right to interview before the closing date.

“We are a well-established school delivering an outstanding education in a caring and inclusive environment, for pupils aged two to 18 years.

We aim to nurture and inspire, igniting pupils’ interests throughout their entire school life, so they become well-rounded, confident, and enthusiastic young people, both now and in the future.

We have a unique offering here at Highclare, with three separate locations in Sutton Coldfield and Erdington, each suitably sized to maintain a family atmosphere. This allows staff to know their pupils thoroughly and successfully guide them through each stage of their school journey.

We believe in fulfilling potential in everyone. Not only do our excellent grades reflect the outstanding teaching delivered at Highclare, but we offer a rounded programme of activities as standard to bring out the talents of every child – from one-on-one music tuition to astronomy or ballet.

Underpinning all that we do is a nurturing and supportive pastoral commitment based on our unshakeable belief that a young person who is happy is much more likely to be an effective learner, and a contented and giving member of our school community – and our society.

Our website provides good insight into life at Highclare School, and I invite you to take a look around to get a taste of what we have to offer, then come and see first-hand what makes our school so special – I would be delighted to meet you.”
