40 hrs per week – 08:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday (with the need to be flexible to occasionally work outside these hours as required)

The Role

Hallfield School is seeking to appoint a skilled Estates & Grounds Assistant to assist with day to day maintenance and compliance of the School estate. This is an integral role within the Estates team and the successful candidate must be confident to lead and complete projects such as erection of studwork, minor alterations and refurbishment tasks.

With an emphasis on Carpentry tasks the role would suit someone with City & Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery. NVQ Level 2 or above in Carpentry would also be advantageous. In addition to Carpentry, multi-trade skills such as bricklaying and plastering would be highly desirable.

The role offers a varied day, within a busy environment, covering maintenance, grounds work and compliance checks and testing. It would suit an individual who takes pride in their work, is able to show initiative whilst working supportively and flexibly within a team. 

Key responsibilities of the Estates & Grounds Assistant include, but are not limited to:

• Carrying out routine maintenance of school facilities in accordance with schedules or in response to break downs including carpentry; plumbing; basic electrical; decorating; drains/gutters.

• Assisting the Estates & Facilities Manager with the running of heating systems.

• Carrying out safety checks on all school vehicles.

• Assisting with moving furniture and equipment for school events and carry out car park duties as required. 

• Responding to emergency breakdowns/incidents and provide relief cleaning in emergencies if required.

• Undertaking weekly and monthly compliance tests including statutory testing of fire safety systems and equipment tests, water flushing, emergency lighting.

• Carrying out audits and checks as directed by the Estates & Facilities Manager

• Assist with the maintenance of sports turf (cutting, mowing, scarifying, verti-draining and fertilizing)

• Maintaining ancillary areas including pathways, for example pruning, felling, planting and clearing of leaves

The Person

The key skills, experience and qualities required to be the Estates & Grounds Assistant:

• Experience of working in a similar role within an educational setting

• Understanding of Health & Safety requirements and principles in a school environment including COSHH

• Knowledge of emergency procedures such as fire evacuation

• Experience of the building trade with a wide range of skills including plumbing, basic electrics, plastering and general building work with carpentry being essential with relevant qualifications (City & Guilds and NVQ would be advantageous)

• Competent with a wide range of tools and machinery relevant to the role

• Effective written and verbal communication skills

• Strong literacy and numeracy skills with administrative experience for example in stock taking and report writing

• Organised and flexible, with a willingness to work unsociable hours if required

• A full driving licence is essential
