Job overview

Runnymede College is a private non-denominational British school in Madrid offering a British education to boys and girls of all nationalities from the age of two to eighteen. The education offered follows the British National Curriculum.

Founded as a private school in September 1967, the primary school was inaugurated in 1987, and since 1990, the whole school has been situated in La Moraleja, a residential estate 13 km to the north of Madrid.

Academic levels are high at Runnymede College. In June 2021, 74% of our students achieved A-A* at A Level, which meant two of our pupils gained places at Oxford, two at St Andrews, three at LSE, four at Imperial College, five at Bath and nine at UCL. Four of last year’s graduates went on to study at the United States: one at Columbia, one at Pennsylvania and two at Boston University. Most of our graduates choose to study in the UK, Spain or the US, although other destinations such as France, Switzerland and the Netherlands are also considered.

The school is looking to recruit an assistant invigilator with a native level of English. The chosen candidate will work alongside our Exams Officer to ensure the smooth running of external exams: IGCSEs, A Levels and SATs.

Contract: temporary, on an ad hoc basis; four Saturdays a year for SATs and throughout the months of May and June for IGCSE and A Level. Hours are flexible (as they depend on the exam timetable) but always fall on weekdays between 9am and 4:30pm for the May and June exams. The schedule for SATs is from 7am to 2pm.

Responsibilities for IGCSEs and A Levels:

  • Following seating requirements according to the seating plan when directing students to seats in the testing room.
  • Ensuring all relevant information is displayed and visible to candidates.
  • Issuing exam papers to candidates and collecting papers at the end.
  • Responding to queries during the exam.
  • Looking out for malpractice during the exam and reporting any irregularities to the Exams Officer.
  • Assisting in the management of emergencies such as candidate illness during an exam, fire alarms, heating/lighting issues, etc.
  • Accounting for used and unused test materials throughout the administration.
  • On occasion, acting as lead invigilator when the Exams Officer is running an exam in a different room.
  • When acting as lead invigilator, reading all instructions to students verbatim from the appropriate testing room manual.

Responsibilities for SATs:

  • Verifying the identity of candidates against their ID and admission ticket.
  • Assisting candidates in finding their assigned seat.
  • Reading all instructions to students verbatim from the appropriate testing room manual.
  • Completing the seating chart once testing has begun.
  • Monitoring students during the entire testing session, including during breaks.
  • Immediately reporting any irregularities to the coordinator and submitting an IR (Irregularity Report).
  • Before dismissing students, carefully checking the identifying information provided on each collected answer sheet against the student’s admission ticket.

The successful candidate:

  • Is a native-level English speaker or entirely bilingual
  • Has previous experience in invigilating official examinations
  • Is extremely personable and well presented
  • Thrives in a busy environment and enjoys working with young people

Our chosen invigilator will have the ability to handle groups of students effectively and in a friendly manner. Exams create much anxiety, so we’re looking for someone who can treat our students’ concerns with empathy and kindness.
