Portland Place School is looking for a flexible, calm and self-disciplined invigilator to help prepare the Data & Exams Manager for the examination season. This is a crucial time for the school, staff and students alike, and the successful candidates will be able to react quickly to changing situations and interact with students in a firm and friendly manor.


Examination Invigilator

Sessional temporary post

£10.75 per hour with a minimum of 3 hours paid per session

The main objective of this role is to conduct examinations in accordance with the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations and Portland Place School instructions. You will play a key role in upholding the integrity of the examination process and to ensure that all candidates have an equal opportunity.

The successful candidate will need to be flexible, well organised, reliable, be able to relate to pupils and comfortable in a high pressure environment. Good spoken and written English is essential as you will be asked to act as a reader or scribe for students. 

The role is a sessional temporary post and is paid on an hourly basis with a minimum of three hours paid per session. You will be required for a mix of morning, afternoon and all day sessions.  You would need to be available from 8.30am for morning sessions and 1pm for afternoon, the role would therefore not be suitable for people who have commitments at these times.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Examination Invigilator

Department: Examinations Office

Reporting to: Data & Exams Manager


Main Objective:

To conduct examinations in accordance with the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), awarding body and Portland Place School instructions.

To play a key role in upholding the integrity of the examination/assessment process.

To ensure that all candidates have an equal opportunity.


Specific Duties:

Before exams

To report to and be briefed by the exams manager prior to each exam session

To keep confidential exam papers and materials secure before, during and after exams

To ensure exam rooms are set out according to the instructions laying out candidate cards and any other equipment necessary for that exam

To set up laptops as and when required

To admit candidates into exam rooms

To identify, seat, and instruct candidates in the conduct of their exams

To distribute the correct exam papers and materials to candidates

To deal with candidate queries


During exams

To supervise and observe candidates at all times and be vigilant throughout exams in order to prevent possible candidate malpractice

To keep disruption in exam rooms to a minimum

To deal with emergencies or irregularities effectively

To record/report any incidents, disruption or irregularities

To complete attendance registers and exam incident log forms

To deal with candidate questions according to the regulations


After exams

To instruct candidates in finishing their exams and to collect exam scripts

To dismiss candidates from the exam room

To check candidates’ names on scripts match the details on their candidate card

To securely return all exam scripts and exam materials to the exams officer


Other

To attend training, update or review sessions as required

To undertake, where required and where able, other duties requested by the exams manager, for example;

facilitating access arrangements for candidates, for example as a reader, scribe etc. (full training will be provided)

supervision of clash candidates between exam sessions

other exams-related administrative tasks


Experience:

Experience of working as an invigilator - Desirable

Experience of working in a school / busy work environment - Desirable

Confidentiality:

The need for absolute confidentiality and discretion, both within Portland Place School and the wider community must be understood and you will be required to sign a confidentiality form upon employment.

Post holder must be available during exam periods, May to June although additional hours may be available at various times throughout the academic year.

This is a casual (no guaranteed hours) position. Hours of work will be agreed with the Examinations Manager. The lunch break is unpaid and does not form part of your working hours. 

Normal working hours are morning between 8.30am to 11.30am and afternoon 1.00pm to 4.00pm with a minimum of three hours pay per session.  It may be necessary to work outside these hours on occasion. 

You must be ready to commence work at these times and report any lateness/illness before 7.30am to the school exam office number 020 7307 8709 in order that other arrangements for your shift can be made.

Portland Place is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational school for students aged 10-16, situated in central London. It is an independent school with a total of around 230 pupils. Portland Place School offers both traditional day school and hybrid school entry.

Portland Place was founded in 1996 at its present site. The Headmaster is Mr David Bradbury.
