Job overview

HMC (The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference) is the professional association of Heads of the world’s leading independent schools. HMC and its members are prominent and influential. We seek someone exceptional to fill the new role of Executive Director in anticipation of the retirement of Dr William Richardson as General Secretary in late 2018.

This individual will lead an unusually engaged membership against the backdrop of a rapidly changing, increasingly complex educational and political landscape. Working in concert with the elected Chair and other senior officers, the Executive Director will support members to be highly effective school leaders, whilst acting as an expert and authoritative voice for HMC. He or she will guide the evolution of the organisation to ensure it properly reflects the needs of its members, is an exemplary employer and builds on its influence at the centre of educational thinking.

The successful candidate will be a skilled, strategic leader with the political acuity and gravitas to be a compelling ambassador for HMC as well as someone who enjoys building credibility from meticulous understanding. He or she will combine the high intellect, low ego, and attention to detail necessary to support a diverse membership with the organisational skills to inspire a small, committed staff. A strong personal affinity with education and young people is essential as is a genuine resonance with HMC members’ commitment to excellence in teaching and care of young people, the central importance of co-curricular activities and authentic leadership.
