Job overview

TreeHouse School is an outstanding, non-maintained special school for children and young people with autism based in Muswell Hill, North London. The school supports children aged 4 to 19 years with autism and complex needs from local authorities across London and the Home Counties and currently has over 85 pupils on roll. The school works to provide children and young people with an education that prepares them for a successful transition to a fulfilling and rewarding life as part of their community. Working via in-house multi-disciplinary teams of teaching staff, behaviour specialists and allied health professionals, the school is committed to delivering an outstanding education for its pupils. Based in the Pears National Centre for Autism Education, a purpose built building that also houses our training and influencing activities, it benefits from a range of excellent vocational and other facilities and resources.

The school’s charity, Ambitious about Autism, is at a key stage in its development.  The Rise School, the first free school in its partnership MAT, is about to move into its new building in Hounslow and other free schools are planned. Its post 19 Ambitious College has two campuses in Barnet and Southall and will eventually cater for over 120 learners in new purpose built centres. Meanwhile TreeHouse School is further developing its plans and own facilities.

As a result of the impending departure of the current Headteacher, the Executive Leadership Team, Governing Body and Board of Trustees of the school are looking to appoint an Executive Headteacher to:

  • Provide inspirational and motivational leadership across TreeHouse School, children’s educational services and the wider academy trust
  • Work with the Governing Body, Board of Trustees and senior staff to develop, implement and evaluate strategic and operational plans
  • Ensure a consistent and continuous school-wide focus on pupils’ achievement
  • Lead and motivate a highly skilled, motivated and professional team
  • Act as the principal conduit of the relationship between TreeHouse School, commissioners, parents and carers and the community

Currently an experienced Headteacher, or experienced senior leader with an NPQH, you have experience of leading and inspiring multi-disciplinary teams to deliver excellent teaching and learning in a school for pupils with special educational needs. We will also consider candidates from the specialist further education sector.  With around 150 staff at TreeHouse, many of whom are experts in the field of autism, your leadership and people management abilities are key considerations.  You are an innovator with a drive for improving performance and support for pupils and families. An excellent communicator, you have experience of being an ambassador for your school and working in partnership with parents and carers, commissioners, local schools and partners. You also have experience of supporting a Governing Body and working with inspectors and other statutory bodies. Above all, you share an absolute commitment to the school’s mission and values.

In return for your energy, integrity and skill, we offer you the opportunity to shape our future, develop and influence provision in the school, the charity and nationally. You will have scope to be creative and have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of children and young people with autism. You will work with a professional and knowledgeable Governing Body and Board of Trustees who are able to provide appropriate challenge and support. TreeHouse School offers the opportunity to make a real impact on a diverse community and provide it with the educational opportunities it aspires to and deserves. You will also be rewarded with a highly attractive remuneration package.

TreeHouse School is a non-maintained special school that was founded in 1997. Based in the heart of a thriving community in north London, it educates autistic pupils aged three to 19 from across London and the Home Counties.

Using the Ambitious Approach to education, pupils receive specialist and personalised support through a dedicated transdisciplinary team of qualified teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists and behaviour specialists.

TreeHouse School works hand in hand with parents and carers, local schools, community groups and employers to maximise opportunities for pupils to enjoy school, succeed in their learning and transition to a fulfilling and rewarding adult life.

Our visions, values and ethos:

Our core beliefs and values provide the foundation for our approach to service delivery. We believe that early diagnosis and intervention is critical to giving all autistic children the best start in life. Effective education has the power to transform their lives and help them reach their potential and to raise expectations for their future.

We are committed to providing high-quality, specialist teaching, learning and support to improve the life chances of those we work with. We believe that the views and choices of children and young people should shape services and because those choices will vary it is essential that a range of educational provision is available.

We also recognise the vital role that parents and carers play in supporting young people to make decisions about their future lives. We are committed therefore to ensuring that we work closely with autistic young people and their families.

Our values are reflected by our commitment to education services which:

  • focus on the best possible outcomes for children, young people, and their families, based on their aspirations and priorities
  • adopt a person-centred approach which ensures that the voice of the young person is at the centre of all we do
  • provide outstanding teaching, learning, and support through a behavioural approach
  • ensure high-quality provision through practice that is reflective and evidence-based
  • work in the best interests of the individual and their family through an effective multidisciplinary approach
  • secure better life chances for autistic children and young people by developing partnerships that support effective transition and a range of appropriate pathways into adulthood.

TreeHouse School pupils follow three core school values:

  • Be safe
  • Make responsible choices
  • Do your best

Our Curriculum:

Our curriculum is tailored to each pupil’s unique qualities, specific needs, and individual starting points. In this way, we can set accurate targets for progress.

In our individualised learning programmes, we assess each pupil extensively and consider their strengths and what they find more challenging. Our curriculum is creative and flexible, using our natural environment to extend pupils’ learning. You are as likely to see maths being practised in the shop, the community or the garden as you are in the classroom. Where appropriate, our curriculum is linked to and, where necessary, differentiated from the National Curriculum’s requirements.

Our personalised curriculum is:

  • individually planned
  • specialised
  • intensive
  • goal-directed
  • guided by pupil performance.

What is like to learn here:

Pupils at TreeHouse School enjoy many educational trips, including visits to the local shops and cafés, or places of interest in London and further afield. Educational visits are an important part of the vibrant curriculum experience.

TreeHouse School also plays a key role in the local community, having long-established links with organisations and businesses in Muswell Hill and across north London.
