Job overview

Lambeth College is joining with London South Bank University (LSBU) to become part of a separate and diverse education group which already includes a multi academy trust and a UTC, as well as the University. LSBU now wishes to recruit an Executive Principal to lead Lambeth College and provide future leadership across the Group for L1 - L3 activity.

LSBU itself is a vibrant, dynamic and enterprising university with 20,000 students from over 130 countries. Based at Elephant & Castle, it’s strongly connected to and engaged with the communities it serves and has been a successful force for social mobility, committed to widening access to higher education and ensuring student success. LSBU is forging links with partner institutions to create professional opportunities for all who can benefit, and to address global challenges. One of those partners is Lambeth College.

Lambeth College currently operates across two sites at Clapham and Brixton. The third site, at Vauxhall, is being transformed into a flagship vocational centre which will serve the regeneration needs of Nine Elms. The annual income is c£23 million and there are 6.700 students. The Executive Principal will take full strategic and operational day-to-day responsibility for the College and for the development and implementation of the business strategy. Providing inspirational leadership and direction, they will develop a strong and visible executive team and build the College’s reputation with the wider community. The Executive Principal will demonstrate a deep understanding of teaching and learning at L1 - L3 and drive improvements in quality to grow student numbers and substantially expand revenue opportunities, particularly around professional and technical training at L3. It’s envisaged that the Executive Principal will, in due course, take on leadership of all Ofsted related activities in the education group; schools, apprenticeships (including that of the University), the UTC and any other FE provision the University might absorb.

Lambeth College, and LSBU, are committed to offering a careers focused education to students. Therefore it’s critical that the Executive Principal play a pivotal role in the educational and economic development of south east London, working with a range of employers, business forums, schools and stakeholders. Promoting an entrepreneurial culture throughout the College will be important too, developing transferable skills in students that are valuable to any career, and encouraging them to seize opportunities to gain extra-curricular experience to develop their employability skills.

Clearly we have an ambitious vision for education in south east London which already encompasses schools, HE and FE and we are seeking an individual who will share that vision and help us to improve the offer to our communities and equip our students with the skills to shape their own futures.

This role offers a rare and exciting opportunity to transform the lives of students and benefit the local business community. In addition, as a member of LSBU’s Senior Management Group, the post will be part of the University’s senior leadership team, offering the Executive Principal the opportunity to play a wider strategic role in the development of an education business worth c180m+. Lambeth College has a key role within this new education group, offering a wide range of pathways for students as a result of this innovative partnership.
