Job overview

Expansion Post: Assistant Head of Maths

Salary: MPS/UPS (Fringe Scale) + TLR + Possible Recruitment & Retention Full-time Permanent

Required from September 2020

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

Are you an inspiring and ambitious teacher ready to join a thriving maths department? Due to continued school expansion to 6 forms of entry and a growing, high-achieving Sixth Form, we seek to appoint a dynamic Assistant Head of Mathematics to teach across the full age and ability range. The Maths department has a strong track record of success at GCSE and A Level, with a high proportion of maths students heading to university each year to study the subject. We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.    This is an exciting time to join a successful high performing department. The post represents an ideal opportunity for an ambitious candidate to assume an important role in the leadership of a key subject area.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area.  Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level.  Our ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which put the school in the top 10% in the country, and we are again ‘Above Average’ in 2019.  At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities has risen significantly over each of the last 4 years with 2018 breaking all school records.

The right candidate will have excellent academic and exam knowledge and be supported by a cast of professional colleagues within a dedicated fully-renovated teaching space. You will be self-motivated, organised and confident. Students’ behaviour at St Mary’s is exemplary and parental support is outstanding, allowing an excellent environment to develop your career further among our reflective and supportive staff.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants.

Closing date: 15th May 2020 Early application is advisable as we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis

Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form.  Please note only applications on St Mary’s form will be accepted. Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
