South Park began as two separate schools, the infant and the junior school, they were only amalgamated relatively recently to form our very large school, currently standing at 817 pupils!  The Nursery which is located down the road from the main school (actually in South Park) was added in 1997 when the Park Keepers lodge was converted.

South Park Primary School is a caring, nurturing and supportive community within which every pupil should feel they have value and can learn to value others. Our Mission statement has recently been reviewed by staff and children and this lays out our beliefs and aims as below:

At South Park Primary School, we believe that every child matters.

We aim to provide a school experience that:

  •  Is stimulating, secure, safe and supportive, allowing them to reach their potential
  •  Develops their personality, talents, academic and physical abilities
  •  Offers a wide range of activities through an exciting and varied curriculum, enriching their everyday experiences
  •  Teaches them to recognise, respect and value the diverse cultures of the school and the wider community
  •  Prepares all children to live and act responsibly now and in the future
  •  Works in partnership with parents and carers to fully support the whole child

Our school holds regular parent forums to discuss a wide range of issues, seeking and acting on parents’ views and ideas.  We have good links with our main feeder secondary school, Mayfield and are looking forward to strengthening the work we do with their older students.

We run a range of after school clubs, which result in many of the children also competing in inter school competitions.  These include football, basketball, netball and Street Dance.  Our choir is well attended and every two years, the children attend the Royal Albert Hall Choral Festival, a fantastic event involving many schools from the local area.

Every year, we hold a Celebration evening to showcase the children’s work from throughout the year.  It is a very busy, lively evening, a great chance to see what the children have achieved as well as an opportunity for the school community to meet and mix informally.

South Park Primary has a very strong community feel, many staff, governors and volunteers at the school were either pupils or have had links with the school since their own children attended.

We continue to build on our privileged position to be part of our local community, holding book fairs (where some of the staff really go to town with their book related outfits!); harvest festival, with the food collected going to the Welcome Centre for the homeless; celebrations of a range of religious festivals, including the annual Carol Service at our local church and sports day at Knox Field.  Parents and friends are always welcome at our events and are extremely supportive, particularly through the recently re-formed PTFA.  We also work hard through the year to support local and national charities, where the school community can always be relied upon to give generously of their time and money.

In spite of working in a building that is now over 100 years old, and as well as celebrating South Park’s varied and colourful past, we are also a forward looking school.  Our ongoing aim is to continue to raise standards, achievement and increase rates of progress for all pupils so that children are well prepared for the next stages of their educational career.  In an ever changing environment, we aim to reach out to our local, national and global community to ensure that children have a broad experience of all that the world has to offer.
