The Experiential Learning Coordinator is a role that requires the incumbent a high level of organisation, self-discipline, and determination. A visionary who understands the power of learning beyond the classroom, the successful candidate will work hard to plan and prepare the processes that govern the student experiences beyond the classroom. An energiser, and positive influencer, they will work closely with the Primary and Secondary Leadership Team, the Safety, Compliance, and Accreditation Officer, the Procurement Office, and the Director of Student Life, the Coordinator will design the outdoor learning experiences of all students at the School. 


Working with the PYP, MYP, and DP Programme Coordinators to establish powerful and purposeful programmes, that align with the teaching and learning philosophies of the School, the Coordinator will look for opportunities to advance the learning of our young people in the outdoors. They will also play a significant role in preparing the School for its inaugural expedition to Nepal and working with counterparts both nationally and internationally to plan expeditions, camps, and hikes in the wilderness from end to end. 


Specific Responsibilities

  • Development, implementation, and review of the annual calendar of all outdoor learning activities, planning, and processing of all EL opportunities in line with the expectations of the Director of Student Life.
  • Administration, including but not limited to the collation, assessment, and review of all Risk Assessments as they relate to all EL experiences.
  • Communication with all stakeholders regarding processes relating to planned field trips and day trips.
  • Attendance and presentation at all EL information evenings and parent engagement meetings.
  • Briefing and where necessary training all staff prior to the EL, highlighting risk, and ensuring staff are adequately prepared for the context to which they are entering.
  • Regularly meeting Procurement to establish a calendar of payment and invoicing that is both timely and clearly articulated.
  • Review of all EL budgets in conjunction with the Director of Student Life. 
  • Preparation of a clearly articulated process that captures each individual EL, and use this as a process for review at the conclusion of each experience.
  • Attend a number of EL opportunities over the course of the year to ascertain viability and validity as they relate to the schools' strategic roadmap.
  • Any other duties that may be required in line with the responsibilities within this role.


The successful candidate will have:

A leadership position within the school this role will require the successful candidate the ability to:

  • plan and prepare all outdoor learning programmes across the school
  • train and develop staff in preparing the administrative and medical requirements of all trips
  • oversee the risk assessment administration for all tripswork closely with the Secondary Principal for annual expeditions to Nepal 
  • research and refer possible opportunities within Switzerland for future trips and make these recommendations based on their own visit to sites across Switzerland
  • align learning objectives with planned teaching opportunities outside of the classroom
  • experience in outdoor education and appropriate related qualifications 
  • wilderness and remote first aid
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build effective relationships 
  • a commitment to child safety and student welfare demonstrating an understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children
  • understanding of the journey of the learner, and experience across a K-12 learning environment
  • ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in Outdoor education

Terms and Conditions

The initial contract is for two years and is renewable. The generous salary and range of benefits will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, with the overall package reflecting the importance of the position.

The ICS Inter-Community School, situated in Zürich, is a mainstream, mixed gender, all-through school located in Zurich. Established in 1960, the ICS now has over 800 students from 55 nationalities.

At the Primary School level The Inter-Community School covers the following subjects; Mathematics, Reading and Writing, The Arts, and Social Studies,
