Job overview

Angel Meadow School is a new independent special school for pupils aged 11–16 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). We specialise in supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, communication difficulties and complex barriers to learning. With very small class sizes (maximum five pupils), a therapeutic culture and a strong emphasis on engagement, we provide a calm, structured and highly personalised learning environment.

As we prepare to open in early 2026, we are seeking an experienced External SENDCo (Associate SENDCo) to lead and quality-assure our SEND systems, compliance and EHCP delivery. This is an ideal opportunity for a skilled SENDCo who enjoys working strategically, building systems and shaping practice in a growing specialist provision without the pressures of a full-time, classroom-based role.

Start date: Expected in line with the school’s opening date, subject to regulatory approval and final timelines.

The Role

The Associate SENDCo will take professional responsibility for SEND coordination and statutory compliance across the school, working closely with the Headteacher and senior leadership team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing EHCP implementation, provision mapping and review cycles

  • Preparing and leading Annual Reviews and LA liaison

  • Ensuring statutory SEND compliance and best practice

  • Supporting teachers and support staff to implement EHCP outcomes in the classroom

  • Developing and maintaining SEND documentation, policies and evidence for Ofsted

  • Advising on admissions, placements and specialist provision

  • Supporting the school’s strategic development as a new SEND provision

This is a non-teaching role, focused on leadership, compliance and impact.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum qualification:
Degree or equivalent professional qualification in education, psychology, SEND, inclusion or a related field.

In addition, candidates must hold:
The National Award for SEND Coordination (or an equivalent SENDCo qualification).

We are also looking for someone who:

  • Has significant experience as a SENDCo in a special school, AP or mainstream setting

  • Has strong knowledge of EHCP processes, the SEND Code of Practice and local authority systems

  • Is confident working with external agencies, therapists and commissioners

  • Can operate independently while working collaboratively with senior leaders

  • Is values-driven and aligned with inclusive, trauma-informed practice

Experience in SEMH, alternative provision or complex SEND is highly desirable.

What We Offer

  • Competitive day rate (£300–£450 per day depending on experience)

  • Flexible working pattern (1–2 days per week)

  • The opportunity to shape a brand-new specialist school from the ground up

  • Supportive, values-driven leadership

  • A genuinely manageable caseload due to small pupil numbers
