Job overview

The Stamford Endowed Schools are seeking to appoint a CCAB level (CIMA, ACCA, or ACA) qualified accountant who will contribute to the strategic financial direction of the School. The Finance Business Partner will report to the Bursar (the School’s CFO) and will be responsible for providing financial analysis and insight that informs strategic and operational decision making.

The School employs over 550 staff and has a turnover of £24m and this is a senior position in the School’s operations team. The Finance Business Partner (‘FBP’) role is focused on ensuring that the School’s Senior Executive Team and Governors have timely, accurate and informative financial information. You will prepare 5 Year Forecasts, the annual budget and monthly management accounts; you will work closely with budget holders across the School to ensure financial targets are met and to help identify opportunities for savings and efficiencies; and you will be involved in project evaluation and ‘what-if’ analysis. The FBP will work closely with the Bursar on a day-to-day basis but will present regularly to the Principal (the effective CEO) and the Governing Body. As a medium size organisation, the role will also provide the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of commercial issues and projects.

This role will suit a recently qualified candidate who is looking for an opportunity to be closely involved in the strategic and operational planning of a medium sized organisation. They should have strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with non-finance specialists is essential. The role will require strong reporting skills, including the ability to use Excel for financial modelling and other tools for providing business intelligence. The ability to move quickly from detail to big picture is central to the role; and the ability to write informative narrative to explain and interpret financial data is essential.

For further information and to apply, please visit the School’s website www.stamfordschools.org.uk/about-stamford/vacancies/

To arrange an informal discussion about the role, please contact Sue Moore, PA to the Bursar on 01780 750340.

Closing date for applications is Thursday 8th October 2020 at 12 noon.

First round interviews will be held on Tuesday 13th October 2020.
Second round interviews will be held on Friday 16th October 2020.

The Stamford Endowed Schools are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The Schools are part of the great heritage of Stamford and a symbol of its vibrancy and evolution. The Schools have been established in Stamford since 1532, providing a first class education for children. Today the Schools remain interwoven with Stamford life, to which our students, teachers and parents contribute greatly. At Stamford we have one simple and overriding aim, that is to inspire our students and light fires within them.

The schools educate 1650 pupils at the Stamford Junior School for children aged 2-11, Stamford School for students aged 11-16, and Stamford Sixth Form for students aged 16-18.

This is a really exciting time to be joining the School as after nearly 500 years as a boys’ school and 200 years as a girls’ school, we have joined together as a fully co-educational school. This restructure is giving us the opportunity to look at all aspects of school life with fresh eyes, and we are looking at everything from how we provide the best possible pastoral care to how we shape the timetable, how we make best use of our estate, to how AI can support classroom learning. It is a big change, but a once in a generation opportunity to really set up the School for the next hundred years.

After this positive change, stamfordians will still be able to leave here poised for success in the real world - quietly confident, kind, positive, hardworking, unassuming and resilient. We are independent schools nurturing independent minds.

"I love the idea of preparing our kids from the school room to the boardroom in the 21st century, wherever that boardroom is in a rainforest in Brazil or as a CEO or working with a charity in India. Just as we have a big responsibility, so will they. I want them not just to be content to live in the world but to change it. Exciting!”

Principal, Will Phelan
