Chetham’s is the largest specialist music school in the UK and is the only one based in the north of England. Our thriving creative community involves more than 300 students, aged 8-18, whose common passion is music.

The Role

We are looking for a positive, capable, and professional Finance Director to help lead our organisation in the next stage of our journey. The role is suited to those with accountancy qualifications who have worked in regulated settings such as schools or charities.

You will be supported by an experienced and hardworking Finance team and will be part of the Executive Leadership of Chetham’s Foundation.

The Finance Director supports the whole organisation in the provision of all non-teaching aspects of the organisation. The Finance Director performs the role of Clerk to the Governors, is a member of the Resources Committee and attends all Governors meetings. In addition, the Finance Director reports to the School’s Health and Safety Committee, the Remuneration Sub Committee, The Library Committee and the International Opportunities Committee Sub Committee.

The Finance Director is accountable for the School finances, and Human Resources, Bursary applications, means-testing, immigration issues for staff and students, safer recruitment practice and compliance, financial audits, budget setting and accounts. Underpinning these functions, is responsibility for: risk identification, Charity Commission and educational bodies’ liaison, relationship management and business administration.

We are looking for a special person who can come and join our team of staff and students. You will need to be strategic, innovative and a team player, with strengths in financial controls and communicating with non-finance colleagues. Your background and previous experience might include work within a school or charity environment and have a strong leadership, management, financial, commercial and project management background to join the Leadership Group as the next Finance Director. The individual will play a major role in the School’s strategic direction, closely working with the Joint Principals and Governors to develop, implement and evaluate the organisation’s Strategic Development Plan. Qualifications in accounting, finance and some HR management are important, as is having the appropriate level of experience, emphasis being placed on having the right mix of skills and personal qualities.

The senior position of Finance Director is a key Joint Principals appointment to ensure the proper financial, and operational running of the organisation as well as providing an important, influential support to the Trustees.

  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends

Chetham’s School of Music is an independent, mainstream school with a sixth form, for children between the ages of eight and 18. The co-educational establishment, based in Long Millgate, Manchester. There is also boarding provision, with approximately 2/3 students staying at the school at present.

The school is part of the Foundation of Chetham’s Hospital School and Library, founded by Humphrey Chetham in 1653. The first students attended the school in 1956. Chetham’s occupies buildings dating back to 1422, as well as new buildings such as the recital hall, which was constructed in 2012. No academic assessment is required to attend the school – entry is based solely on musical talent.

Chetham’s School of Music aims to deliver stimulating lessons that encourage pupils to develop good learning habits. Students get the chance to showcase their musical talents by performing in lunchtime concerts. Teachers and children value each other and celebrate everyone’s successes. Pupils are urged to attend the performances of their peers, giving feedback and showing their support.

“Levels of supervision at all times are good. Staff have appropriate levels of training to care for the age and needs of the pupils and the nature of the activity. The school has an appropriate and comprehensive written behaviour policy, which covers behaviour both during the school day and at other times. It includes the school rules, disciplinary sanctions, occasions when restraint may be used and also arrangements for searching pupils and their possessions. The policy is effectively implemented throughout the school.”
