Job overview

The Executive Headteacher and Governors are seeking to appoint an excellent practitioner, ideally with experience of leading a team, to join this highly successful, award winning secondary school for children who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. This role will involve working with students both in school, and off-site, who are accessing alternative education opportunities alongside the core curriculum. Our Flexible Learning Programme is primarily aimed at Key Stage 4 students and the successful candidate will be expected to lead a small team who support some of our most hard to reach students. The role will involve supporting students who have become disengaged from their school-based learning and who will benefit from a vocational education pathway. The Flexible Learning Team are involved in transporting students to Alternative Education Providers, supporting their learning and ensuring that they are making good progress in a vocational curriculum pathway that meets all of their needs. In addition to this, the successful candidate will also be expected to teach core curriculum subjects to individuals and small groups, to ensure that they are able to make rapid progress in English and mathematics.

Judged to be outstanding in all areas during our most recent inspection, we are looking to develop our team further following the retirement of the current incumbent. Kilgarth School is proud of its ability to innovate to meet the constantly evolving needs of our young people, who often display challenging behaviour.

The successful candidate will have experience of working with children with a range of additional needs including SEMH, autism and learning difficulties. They will be a creative, reflective classroom practitioner with the ability to analyse data and hold others to account. Excellent ICT skills are essential, as is the ability to plan and meet the needs of learners with a range of needs. The successful candidate will be line managed by a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will be expected to attend regular meetings to provide updates on all aspects of students’ progress.

Our leadership team focus on the well-being of all members of our school community, resulting in a low staff turnover; this is therefore an exciting opportunity to join our team as we develop ambitious strategic plans to support some of our country’s most vulnerable children. It is imperative that the successful candidate will have the ability to engage with difficult to reach families and students, devising flexible approaches to meet their individual needs.

Please return completed application forms with a supporting letter to the Executive Headteacher at the school address.

Candidates selected for interview will be invited to visit the school during the week commencing 15th May 2017. If you have not heard from the school by the 12th May 2017 assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.

This post is subject to an Enhanced Level DBS check.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All applicants will be considered on the basis of suitability for the post regardless of sex, race or disability.
