French Language Assistant
Summary of main responsibilities
To assist with the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages by giving conversation lessons to individual students or
small groups of students, as indicated by the subject teacher or the Head of Modern Languages.
The role
• To promote the study of languages amongst students.
• To conduct approximately 12 x 30-minute periods of conversation per week (although the precise number of lessons taught will vary according to the number of students studying the language at A-level). In previous years, the lessons have been timetabled over two half days.
• To prepare resource material for the conversation classes under the guidance of the Head of Modern Languages.
• To familiarise him/herself with the format of the A-Level oral exams.
• To keep records of each student’s progress in conversation lessons. The assistant will not be expected to write reports or attend parents’ consultations but may be asked to make a comment to teachers so that reference can be made to pupils’ progress in reports or at parents’ consultations.
Professional standards
• To conduct himself/herself as a member of staff and to be aware of the example he/she should set to pupils.
• To arrive in class promptly.
• To familiarise himself/herself with the Code of Conduct.
• To check and respond to email, to read the calendar and the Common Room noticeboards (and to attend staff briefing if it falls on a day when he/she is in school).
