The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth.

The Modern Languages Department is seeking to appoint a native-level speaker of French to the post of part-time Language Assistant to conduct conversation lessons in French, principally with pupils in Years 10 to 13.

The post is for 10 hours per week, term time only.

Duties will include assisting pupils in small groups or 1-1 with their preparation for each of the oral examination components, working closely with the class teacher and conducting oral exams. The Language Assistant is expected to discuss a variety of topics in French , to support the curriculum, and to become familiar with the requirements of the curriculum. Above all, applicants should display a willingness to develop pupils' confidence and conversation ability in French.

French is one of three languages taught to IGCSE and results are very good, with many pupils going on to study the subject in the Sixth Form. The department is well-equipped with two language laboratories, both of which are fully computerised with multi-media facilities.

The start date will be 1st September 2021.

The hourly rate of pay will be £20.48 which includes holiday pay for this term time only role.

The school will auto-enrol eligible support staff into the NEST pension scheme and also offers an alternative pension scheme with Scottish Widows whereby if the employee contributes 6.5% of salary the school will contribute 8.5%. We also have a non-contributory death-in-service policy.

The school is an approved operator of the ‘salary sacrifice’ Cycle to Work Scheme. Additional benefits include free use of the school’s Sports facilities which include a well-equipped Fitness Centre.

During an ISI Inspection in late 2022 both the achievement of the pupils, including their academic development and the personal development of the pupils were found to be excellent - the highest possible classification. The Inspection also looked at the School’s compliance with the regulatory standards and requirements. PGS met all the standards required.
