Aldwickbury is an independent day and flexi-boarding school for boys located in 20 acres of grounds on the outskirts of Harpenden in Hertfordshire.

As a Pre-Prep and Prep School Aldwickbury currently has a pupil roll of 385 boys aged 4-13 years. Operated as an Educational Trust the School is administered by a Board of Governors and is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAP's), the Boarding School Association (BSA) and The Independent School Christian Alliance (TISCA).

Job Purpose

To work as part of the kitchen team to provide nutritious meals to pupils and staff, to take a share of responsibility in keeping the kitchen clean and to provide a high standard of hospitality service at school functions and events.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Catering Assistant

·        Assist chefs with lunch preparation, sandwich prep and morning snack prep

·        Assist set up of the dining room and serve at counters for both lunch services

·        Assist with cleaning of dining room and kitchen after service

·        Set up and serve boys’ afternoon snack

·        Set up tea/coffee in the staff room

·        Maintain the required levels of hygiene in line with Health and Safety regulations.

·        You may be required to perform additional tasks as needed by the Head Chef or Domestic Services Manager

·        You will be required to complete a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene course and a Food Allergen and Intolerance training course. This can be completed during your induction period

·        This job description is not necessarily comprehensive, and the position holder will be required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required within the general scope and level of the post.

 Front of House

·        To work closely with the Domestic Services Manager in the day to day organization and running of Front of House operations.

·        To be able to work independently when preparing for various types of hospitality (e.g., coffee and chat, parents evening etc.)

·        To assist DSM and HC in weekly organization of Front of House, including familiarizing yourself and others in the kitchen with the events for the week, assist in delegating preparation for functions to others.

·        To share responsibility with the DSM for correct organization of Front of House stock, ensuring hospitality storage cupboards are clean and tidy, and that equipment is functioning and usable (e.g. no chipped cups, water marked glasses etc.)

·        To monitor regularly used stock and report to the HC/DSM when more is required (e.g., wine/ water/beers etc.)

·        To take part in any training the DSM/School feel would be beneficial to further developing your role.

Within this role you will be expected to work a proportion of evening/ weekend hospitality events, some independently and some with the Domestic Services Manager, which take place during the academic year. These include, but are not limited to, events such as the Governors annual dinner, the summer bazaar, prize giving, fireworks night, parents evening, Year 8 leavers day/ meal, AFA summer ball, coffee and chat mornings and sports days. (Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and is subject to change during the year.)

·        For some events you will be solely in charge, for others you will be supported by the Domestic Services Manager, depending on the size of the event.  

Person Specification

·        Have a commitment to an excellent service culture and proactively solve problems

·        Highly motivated, maintain high standards

·        Needs to be a strong team player

·        Good sense of humour

·        Able to get things done correctly and on time with minimal direction

·        Have a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and adhere to and comply with the School's Child Protection Policy statement at all times. 

·        Experience in a school catering environment is desirable but not essential. 

Remuneration, Hours, and Benefits

Salary

The salary for this post is £13.20 per hour, dependent on experience.

For events which fall after 5pm, you will be paid overtime or offered time off in lieu (TOIL)

Hours of work

Working Hours are 40 hours per week. Term time only. 36 weeks per year.  

Monday - Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm

Aldwickbury is a highly regarded and established preparatory school, having been founded in Harpenden in 1937, moving to the current site in 1948. The school occupies a fine Victorian house in pleasant country surrounds. The facilities and resources are very good and the premises are well equipped and are set in twenty acres of grounds. The school is run as a charitable company and is a member of I.A.P.S., the Boarding Schools Association and the International Boys’ School Coalition. 

There are approximately 250 boys in Years 3 to 8, and another 125 boys in our Pre-Preparatory department. Boys from Year 5 may board and some 50 do so on a flexible basis. Boys leave Aldwickbury at 13+ via Common Entrance, entry tests or scholarship examinations for senior independent schools such as St Albans, Bedford, Haileybury, St Columba’s, Berkhamsted, H.A.B.S., Harrow, The Leys, M.T.S. and Oundle.  

Aldwickbury looks to develop boys’ self-esteem and ensure that they reach their potential in all aspects of school life. The boys’ achievements in classwork, drama, art, music, sport and so on are celebrated whenever possible. The school is busy and purposeful; visitors often comment on the friendly open nature of the boys. The Staff Common Room is happy and dedicated; in service training is encouraged and provided for all members of staff.
