Job overview

A family based in Munich who travel frequently around the globe are looking for an exceptional bilingual homeschooling tutor to work full-time with their daughter, aged five. The tutor must be a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and fluent in English or German.

The family lead a highly mobile life, and whilst the first year of the engagement is to take place in Munich, the tutor can expect to travel frequently. The family is currently considering relocating to China, which if confirmed, will take place during the autumn of the second year of the engagement, in which case, the tutor will be expected to travel with them.

The parents wish to design an educational pathway, together with a tutor, that does not hinge on any single curriculum or educational philosophy, but rather which takes the best components of each, and above all, stimulates a passion for learning, independence and creativity.

The student has been attending a traditional Montessori school in New York and then Munich. The parents appreciate the approach of Maria Montessori and believe it provided an excellent foundation for their daughter’s development.

Role of the tutor

The tutor should be a supportive and nurturing presence, becoming invested in the girl’s future. The tutor will devise a plan of study in conjunction with the family that takes into consideration the girl’s natural aptitudes and interests, the cultural setting in which the family find themselves and evidence from research into Educational Psychology and Cognitive Development. The tutor should have a pleasant and affirmative attitude and will be expected to take the initiative in her time with the child once the aims and approach are clearly understood. The tutor should bring his or her own passions to bear on the life of the family, helping expand the experience and range of ideas they encounter.

A key objective of the tuition is for the daughter to become fluent in Mandarin Chinese through immersion. As such, lessons should be conducted in Chinese as soon as and whenever possible. Chinese will be reinforced outside of lessons by the father, who speaks the language fluently. By the end of the initial 12 months, the daughter may be enrolled into a Mandarin-speaking school, and so the tutor should prepare her for this linguistically, culturally and socially.

Tuition will take the form of a bespoke curriculum of studies. The parents want to ensure their daughter is comprehensively exposed to the necessary pillars of an independent, intellectual and aesthetic experience of life. However, they feel strongly that tuition should be driven at a pace that permits the exploration of new concepts at the rate of their daughter’s interest. The program will include an emphasis on the STEM subjects, but without neglecting Art and Crafts and the other humanities.

Desired Tutor profile

Being a native speaker in Mandarin Chinese is an essential requirement of the position, as is fluency in one of English or German, and a sensitivity and appreciation of differences in cultures. Experience of living in different countries, particularly in China, would be advantageous as would a bicultural background from China and America or Germany.

The ideal candidate will have ample experience of teaching primary-aged students and an understanding of the significant developmental milestones across different curricula. They should be highly educated, having attended a top-tier university and should have a passion for pedagogy and different modalities of teaching. Knowledge of alternative educational philosophies such as Montessori and Project-Based Learning is desirable, as is an interest in the research into Pedagogy and Cognitive Development.

The ideal candidate will have an energetic, dynamic and upbeat character, and lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Being sporty and having experience teaching sports is desirable, as is the ability to educate through sport and physical activity more generally.

In addition to the girl’s formal education, the tutor will also be responsible for certain nannying duties, especially the coordination of the girl’s timetable. Therefore, demonstrable organisational skills are paramount, as is the possession of a full, clean driving licence.

Commencement Date: As soon as the right candidate is identified.

Contractual Term: 24 months, with possible subsequent renewals. The client will have the right to terminate this agreement after one year.

Salary: A basic salary of $110,000 per annum with a completion bonus equivalent to 10% of the total salary across the engagement.

Days Off: The tutor will coordinate with the family on a weekly schedule which may involve 4, 5 or 6 day workweeks depending on family scheduling needs.

Holidays: The tutor will receive 40 days of paid leave per annum. The tutor should expect to work throughout term time without a holiday. Holiday dates will be fitted around the family’s schedule and will fall mostly during school holidays.

Accommodation: The tutor will be provided with a stipend to cover appropriate housing equivalent $2,000 per month.

Travel: The tutor will be required to travel with the family, with flights and accommodation provided.

Meals: The tutor will be provided with at least one meal per working day with the family, and will be responsible for their other meals.
