Job overview

STUDENTS & BACKGROUND

A family in Bermuda is seeking a full-time tutor to work with their four sons, aged 18, 16, 13 and 11 over the course of the next two academic years.

The eldest child will be undergoing full-time homeschooling and is the focus for private tuition. The younger three children are all at school and the tutor will be working in an academic support capacity with them outside of school hours.

The eldest student is currently preparing for A-Levels in Mathematics, Economics and History, which he will sit in the summer term of 2022, with an eye to studying Mathematics at University in the UK. He is a highly capable and intelligent student but his studies have suffered during the pandemic and he needs help maintaining motivation and focus on his long-term goals. He is a keen tennis player and enjoys many outdoor activities on the island.

The second oldest child will be starting the AP curriculum in Mathematics, Economics and Physics, having previously studied the British curriculum up to GCSE. He is highly self-motivated and intelligent, and is a competitive sailor.

The tutor will primarily be working with the older children, with any time remaining spent with the younger ten and thirteen year old boys. They are well-rounded children who enjoy taking on extracurricular projects in which they build and develop ideas and concepts. In the past these have included writing a book and making an online shop.

ROLE OF THE TUTOR

The tutor will spend the majority of the time teaching the eldest as he prepares for A-Levels.

Aside from teaching these subjects, the tutor should emphasise the skills and techniques for him to be self-motivated and learn on his own. Therefore, a tutor is sought with whom he has a good dynamic, capable of working together for long periods of time, as well as inspiring a love of learning and determination in his studies.

The second oldest will be the secondary focus. The tutor will work in an academic support capacity, ensuring he is staying on top of his Mathematics, Economics and Physics syllabi and, if this is achieved, diving into any particular areas of interest above and beyond the curricula that he would like to explore.

Any time remaining from working with the two eldest students will be spent with the younger children. The primary aim for the younger students is to ensure the basics of their education are being covered across the Sciences and Humanities. It is also desirable that the tutor work with them to determine and undertake a long-term project based on their interests. The ideal scenario would celebrate stress-free exploration of material they have not had the chance to encounter in their schools’ curriculum, motivating the children to arrive home from school ready to embark on further study.

The tutor can expect to work around four hours per weekday with the eldest child, and then spend some time with the younger three children from 4pm onwards once they return from school. A good rapport with the family is essential. Given the long-term nature of the assignment, the tutor will become an extended part of the family and would join the family for dinner.

The role may commence online, before the necessary paperwork is completed to bring the tutor out to Bermuda.

DESIRED TUTOR PROFILE

The ideal applicant will be an accomplished teacher or tutor with an exemplary academic record and experience of teaching a breadth of subjects at various levels.

Being able to teach Maths and Economics up to A Level is an essential requirement for the position. Further to this, History and / or Physics to A Level are also highly desirable, as well as experience working with children as young as 11. Knowledge of French and Spanish would be advantageous but not essential.

The tutor must be highly motivated with impeccable organisational skills, capable of planning and executing various plans of study simultaneously. He / she should be a good role model and a proponent of an active and outdoors lifestyle.
