Your Role as a Function Skills Tutor

Are you passionate about education and rehabilitation? We are seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to join our team at HMP & YOI Peterborough. This is an opportunity to make a real difference by supporting learners to increase their basic education levels and gain recognised qualifications in English and/or maths, up to City & Guilds Level 2.

You will be responsible for planning, developing, and delivering engaging and innovative lessons tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners. As part of a self-directed learning approach, you will play a key role in empowering prisoners to develop their skills, confidence, and independence. Your work will directly contribute to reducing re-offending rates by increasing employability and aiding successful reintegration into the community.

Working closely with the Education, Skills and Work Manager and Hub Leaders, you will monitor attendance, track learner progress, and provide constructive feedback to support achievement. You will also collaborate with other education and prison staff to ensure a cohesive and inclusive learning environment. Participation in department events and CPD activities will also be an integral part of the role.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • Full teaching qualification (Minimum of CTLLS) or PGCE (or working towards)
  • Experience delivering functional skills in a classroom setting
  • A strong interest in the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders
  • Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written
  • A flexible and responsive attitude to teaching and learning
  • Enthusiasm for the subject area and a commitment to innovative teaching methods
  • Self-motivation and a proactive, dynamic approach
  • Commitment to promoting equal opportunities and inclusivity

Desirable:

  • Assessor or Internal Verifier (IV) qualification
  • Experience working within a prison or secure environment
