Capel Manor College is London’s only specialist college for natural studies and an internationally renowned learning resource for those interested in Horticulture, Animal Management, Saddlery, Arboriculture, Floristry, Garden Design, Countryside and the Environment.

Many of our students are committed and motivated to retake their GCSE’s and/or improve their Functional Skills. However, some of our students arrive at Capel with barriers to overcome through their previous experiences of formal learning in these subjects. This role is a challenge, but together with a great team and your passion, students will understand the critical importance of Maths and English for their future careers and be motivated to achieve.

A key part of this role is to spot the potential for, and deliver, ‘lightbulb moments’ in the vocational curriculum. This might mean supporting animal care students to understand rotation through enclosure design, horticulture students to engage with area through garden design challenges, floristry students to practice budgeting through floral displays or arboriculture students to estimate the height of a tree they are about to climb.

One of our students recently commented ‘I didn’t enjoy Maths at school, but when I came to Capel I saw how important English and Maths is to my future career. This motivated me to get my Functional Skills Level 1.’

We are currently looking for a Functional Skills and GCSE Tutor who will be responsible for delivering Maths and English to students across our centres. This role is primarily to teach Maths and the ideal candidate will have experience in delivering Mathematics at all levels, in particular GCSE.  However, English teaching is part of this role and applications are also invited from those with experience of delivering Functional Skills English at all levels. We also welcome applications from people with different professional backgrounds who can display they have the key competencies listed below.

The College welcomes applications from experienced teachers or those new to the profession. For those new to the profession, the College offers an excellent CPD programme that includes the funding of a PGCE.

Essential Skills and Experience:

 • Relevant degree, or professional accreditation, HND or equivalent

• Experience of working in an educational or training environment • Enthusiasm for working with challenging learners and learners of all abilities

• A high level of ICT skills to operate tracking and management systems effectively

What’s in it for you? The college offers a unique working environment with a range of benefits including:

• Access to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme or LGPS (depending on job role)

• Employee assistance programme

 • Superb staff development opportunities

Hours: Full Time - 36 hours per week  This post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and barring list check as it is within regulated activity due to the college being defined as a ‘specified place’. The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment.  Capel Manor College aims to employ a workforce which reflects the community it serves. Therefore applications from minority groups are welcomed. Where applicants indicate they have a disability and meet the essential criteria in the person specification, they will be short-listed for interview.
