General Kitchen Assistant

Reporting to:  Catering Manager

Salary :   £11.40 per hour pro rata 

Working Hours: Monday- Friday (20 hours a week)  shift pattern usually between 10.00am-2.00pm/10.30am-2.30pm/11.00am-3.00pm. 39 weeks a year. 

There is also an expectation that shifts should be altered to oversee service in the evenings and weekends for occasional school events.

Responsible for: No subordinate staff

Position Multiple

We are looking for a General Kitchen Assistant to start with us, joining our friendly Catering team.

As a kitchen Assistant, you would be expected to carry out food preparation as well as cleaning the kitchen. It is very important that you are able to keep your own work area clean and tidy and well organised as you work.  Completing tasks hygienically and protecting food from contamination are legal safety requirements, as well as allowing you to work efficiently and professionally. You would follow strict hygiene, health and safety rules.

You will not usually need any particular qualifications to work as a kitchen assistant. However, a good standard of general education would be useful and be able to communicate with confidence to both students and staff. Organising and managing your time well is essential as the role is time-specific.  It is also essential that you have worked previously within a commercial catering environment and have a good level of cooking and food preparation.

You should also be able to work as part of a team, to work together with others to reach the desired goals within a specific time.  You should be reliable, dependable and always punctual.  A good communicator, you should be able to listen to instructions and able to pass on relevant information clearly and promptly.  You should be open to feedback and always willing to learn new skills and techniques, and learn from experience.  You should have empathy with others and listen to the point of view of other team members.

Support and development:

At Heartlands, we use School IP to track and support training and ongoing CPD. Depending on your need and level of experience, you will be placed on a training pathway.
