About the Department

At Outwood Grange Academy, our close-knit Geography department is more than just colleagues; we're a family of educators at different career stages, from ECT to UPS. This diverse blend ensures our curriculum benefits from a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives, fostering a collaborative environment where every team member thrives. We invest in continuous professional development, empowering each member to excel.

We are a high-achieving and highly regarded department within the Academy and is conveniently located at the heart of the school. The classrooms, in close proximity, foster mutual support and emphasise the importance of geography for our students. The Geography area is rich in resources, constantly evolving to provide an engaging experience for our students. Also our large classrooms boast state-of-the-art smartboards, enhancing the learning experience for all.

Our vision is to put students first in order to raise standards and transform lives. To make this happen, we innovate constantly, including a curriculum that is designed to enable personalised learning in depth and with breadth. In Geography, our students embark on a comprehensive three-year Key Stage 3 journey. Beginning with one hour per week in Year 7, it expands to two hours in Year 8 and Year 9. Our robust geography curriculum revolves around core concepts: sustainability, human and physical interactions, physical processes, climate change, and development. We design our topics to exceed the National Curriculum standards, exploring local, national, and international levels. This foundation not only prepares students for our highly popular GCSE and A Level courses, following the AQA syllabus, but also equips them for life beyond the academy.

We are an Outstanding rated, 11-18 academy based in the cathedral city of Wakefield, near Leeds.

The Outwood Family was born out of our academy’s success and we are proud that after our last inspection, Ofsted paid tribute to the ‘academy staff and leaders for the way they ensure you get the best education possible.’

We have nurtured a school community that is welcoming and friendly, where students and staff can make excellent progress together, with a focus on creating a culture of success, a positive climate for learning, and increased attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
